Abstract(s)

Nasal parakeratosis of Labrador Retrievers is a rare syndrome characterized by proliferative change of the planum nasale. This syndrome has been reported exclusively in Labrador Retrievers or their crossbreeds. Black, yellow, and chocolate Labrador Retrievers are affected. Apparently it has a hereditary basis, and an autossomal recessive mode of inheritance has been proposed. Affected dogs develop dry, rough lesions especially in the dorsal surface of the planum nasale, but are otherwise healthy. Lesions develop between 6 months and 1 year of age. The authors describe a case of a female, one year old Labrador crossbreed dog presenting a dry, scaly nasale lesion. The cutaneous lesions affected exclusively the nasale planum. Skin biopsy showed a mild hyperkeratosis, parakeratosis, and acantosis. The keratin layer, presented small serum lakes and small vacuoles. Based in the breed, age, location and cutaneous lesions, a diagnosis of nasale parakeratosis of the Golden Retriever was preformed.
