Abstract The present study has as main objective to investigate if the attendance of Music Teaching during the 1st Cycle of Basic Education, a Curriculum Enrichment Activity (CEA) implemented within the Full Time School Project, is related to the students’ performance in the school subject Musical Education taught in the 5th grade of the Public School Grouping of the Municipality of Viseu. For this effect, we conducted a non-experimental, causal-comparative, investigation also designated by ex post facto research, establishing a sample divided into two independent groups of students from the 5th grade. This sample is composed of 227 students belonging to six of the eight School Groupings of the Municipality of Viseu, 136 of whom attended Music Teaching (as a CEA) and 91 who did not. For the data collection we used a survey applied to all the Musical Education teachers (of the 5th grade) and the Music Teaching ones (of CEA) from all the School Groupings, as well as 136 students who attended Music Teaching. The inferential analysis of the data confirmed the hypothesis that "the students in the 5th grade who attended the activity of Music Teaching (as a CEA) during the 1st Cycle of Basic Education have a better school performance in the subject of Musical Education than those who did not attend it at primary school." We can then conclude that the activity of Music Teaching (as a CEA) is an added value in the training of students in basic education and, in particular, in the development of essential musical skills in the continuation of their musical training.
