Abstract(s)
estudo pretende compreender quais as principais preocupações, prioridades e
a criança/jovem.
A disability can become a risk factor in children development, increasing stress levels in the family system due to their more demanding care and educational tasks. Families of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are subjected to increased stress levels as a result of the specific features of the disorder. This study aims to comprehend the main concerns, priorities and resources of the families and from there elaborate a parenting program that can empower them on an emotional and (in)formative level. An action research and transversal study was conducted, using the following instruments of data collecting: semi-structured interview, Family Needs Survey (Bailey & Simeonsson, revised, 1990), Parent Stress Index (Abidin & Santos, 2003) and a socio-demographic survey. The convenience sample was consisted of eleven caretakers of children/youngsters with ASD from an Early Childhood Intervention reference Scholl Group in the Figueira da Foz County, attending from pre-school to high school levels. Findings show that the main needs of these families are related to information support regarding the ASD and social and emotional support, thus showing a poor informal support net and a lack of formal support specifically adapted to ASD in the County. There’s also a denoted concern with the future, something that is transversal to all of the children/youngsters age range, and higher stress levels than the normative ones, in exception to the emotional and affective adjustment of the child/youngster.
