Recentemente, testemunhamos um aumento no número de crianças refugiadas que chegam às nossas fronteiras, provenientes de regiões assoladas por conflitos armados, perseguições e adversidades extremas. Essa realidade apresenta desafios legais e humanitários complexos, que exigem atenção imediata e ação por parte da sociedade portuguesa. A integração de crianças refugiadas nas escolas em Portugal emerge como uma questão humanitária crucial, destacando os desafios enfrentados por esses jovens, seus pais e educadores no processo de adaptação ao contexto educacional português. Pretendeu-se compreender e identificar desafios e necessidades das crianças refugiadas na escola portuguesa. Trata-se de um estudo de cariz exploratório, recorrendo-se à análise documental de uma amostra de notícias de jornais diários e semanários nacionais (n=24), assim como de relatórios de referência na área. Na revisão documental realizada, identificam-se em primeiro lugar, dificuldades relacionadas com o espaço físico (44%), na medida em que parece não haver capacidade de colocação das crianças, nomeadamente no primeiro ciclo de escolaridade, educação pré-escolar e creche. Verifica-se ainda pouco domínio da língua (33%) por parte dos educadores (in)formais o que dificulta quer a aprendizagem, quer a adaptação destes educandos antevendose o que o ensino a distância possa constituir uma ferramenta valiosa e obrigatória para olmatar as referidas dificuldades. Na nossa análise também se identificam problemas de integração e exclusão (23%). Portugal tem a obrigação ética e legal em acolher e proteger crianças refugiadas, em conformidade com acordos internacionais e tratados de direitos humanos, como a Convenção sobre os Direitos da Criança. Neste compromisso humanitário contínuo, é fundamental a discussão, avaliação e aprimoramento das políticas e práticas relacionadas com a integração de crianças refugiadas, bem como a melhoria contínua de profissionais e políticas públicas em Portugal.Migration, particularly the inclusion of refugee children, has gained significant global relevance and in Portugal. In recent years, we have witnessed an increase in the number of refugee children arriving at our borders, coming from regions afflicted by armed conflicts, persecution, and extreme hardships. This reality presents complex legal and humanitarian challenges that demand immediate attention and action from Portuguese society. The integration of refugee children into schools in Portugal emerges as a crucial humanitarian issue, highlighting the challenges faced by these young people, their parents, and educators in the process of adapting to the Portuguese educational context. The aim is to understand and identify the challenges and needs of refugee children in Portuguese schools. This is an exploratory study, based on documentary analysis of a sample of news articles from national daily and weekly newspapers (n=24), as well as reference reports in the field. The documentary review identified, firstly, difficulties related to physical space (44%), as there seems to be insufficient capacity to accommodate children, particularly in preschool, daycare, and primary education. It was also found that there is limited language proficiency (33%) among (in)formal educators, which hinders both learning and adaptation of these students. In this regard, distance learning may be considered a valuable and necessary tool to address these difficulties. The analysis also revealed problems of integration and exclusion (23%). Portugal has an ethical and legal obligation to welcome and protect refugee children, in line with international agreements and human rights treaties, such as the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
