O desenvolvimento tecnológico avança a um ritmo avassalador e cria novos fenómenos, como o dataísmo, a infocracia e o capitalismo da vigilância. Com o presente estudo, pretendemos fornecer o nosso contributo para a compreensão destes fenómenos e analisar o seu impacto na criação de uma nova sociedade assente numa mescla paradoxal resultante do choque entre uma visão dataista emergente e os pressupostos humanistas que servem de base às democracias liberais. Para tal, realizou--se uma viagem pela história, procurando perceber o papel da comunicação no desenvolvimento das sociedades humanas e na relação entre os individuos e as estruturas sociais; analisaram-se os paradoxos que caraterizam uma sociedade marcada pela velocidade e pelo poder crescente da informação; e, através de uma análise de caráter exploratório que consiste no estudo dos escândalos associados à Cambridge Analytica, atendendo igualmente à reação das autoridades da União Europeia, conseguiu-se perceber que é efetiva a ameaça produzida por uma visão dataista totalizadora e é, realmente, urgente e necessário estabelecer limites legais e morais para a exploração dos dados pessoais dos cidadãos.
Technological development is advancing at an overwhelming pace and creates new phenomena such as dataism, infocracy and surveillance capitalism. With this investigation, we intend to contribute to the understanding of these phenomena and analyze their impact on the creation of a new society based on a paradoxical mix resulting from the clash between an emerging dataist vision and the humanist principles that underpin liberal democracies. In order to do this, a journey through history was undertaken, seeking to understand the role of communication in the development of human societies and in the relationship between individuals and social structures; the paradoxes that characterize a society marked by the speed and growing power of information were analyzed; and, through an exploratory analysis consisting of a study of the scandals associated with Cambridge Analytica, also taking into account the reaction of the European Union authorities, it was possible to see that the threat produced by a totalizing dataist vision is real and that it is really urgent and necessary to establish legal and moral limits for the exploitation of citizens' personal data.
