Speaking care: a collaborative online international learning experience in English with future nurses and pharmacists

Background: Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) offers an inclusive approach to internationalisation by connecting students and faculty across borders through virtual teamwork. In health education, COIL promotes linguistic, intercultural, and interdisciplinary competencies essential for international and interprofessional communication. Aim: This study examined how collaborative COIL activities - Padlet introductions, videoconferencing, poster design, and reflective writing - supported ‘Technical English in Health’ learning and soft skill development across Portuguese Nursing and Belgian Pharmaceutical Sciences students. Methods: A qualitative case study design, aligned with the Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research, was used. Data from 29 IPV (Portugal) and 27 UMONS (Belgium) students were collected through observation, learning portfolios, and collaborative outputs, then analysed via reflexive thematic analysis. Results: Findings indicated that COIL enhanced students’ technical English proficiency, teamwork, and problem-solving skills while fostering cultural awareness and interprofessional communication. Despite challenges in coordination and communication, participants reported increased confidence in interdisciplinary collaboration and patient education. Conclusions: COIL represents an effective pedagogical strategy for developing linguistic and intercultural competencies in healthcare education, enriching students’ readiness for international professional contexts.
Rethinking School Inclusion: A Comparative Analysis of Decree-Laws No. 3/2008 and No. 54/2018 in Portugal Based on UNESCO Reports

This article proposes a comparative analysis of Decree-Laws No. 3/2008 and No. 54/2018, legal instruments that define the models for supporting inclusive education in Portugal. By linking national regulatory developments with data and recommendations from UNESCO’s monitoring reports (GEM Reports), this research assesses the structural and conceptual changes underlying Portuguese education policy. The research follows a qualitative approach, of an exploratory and interpretative nature, using comparative document analysis as the central method. The results reveal a transition from a model focused on categorizing students with special educational needs (SEN) to an approach focused on universally meeting the needs of all students. The Discussion and Conclusions and Recommendations highlight the need to strengthen teacher training, pedagogical leadership, and monitoring based on disaggregated data, as recommended by UNESCO.
The sustainability of regions as a challenge for higher education - the problem-solving and project-building methodology in teaching cultural management

Teaching in higher education is a constant challenge, as it requires not only permanent updating, but also the search for and implementation of the most appropriate methodologies that enable the transmission of scientific and technical knowledge to students and their training to apply abstract knowledge to concrete situations in the future profession. The Cultural Management unit of the Tourism, Cultural and Heritage Management degree, due to its multidisciplinary nature, requires the use of teaching methodologies that are capable of involving students in problem-solving and enabling them to intervene in the different areas of cultural management, namely: urban management and rehabilitation; management of built heritage; and management of cultural tourism. This is why this unit was taught (2023-2024) using the problem-solving and project-building methodology, promoting collaborative teaching and action research. The choice of this methodology sought to: increase students' critical thinking; foster creativity; apply scientific knowledge to real-world situations; and build students' confidence in their skills. Therefore, we intend to present not only the learning path taken throughout the semester, but also the results achieved. We also intend to demonstrate how the construction of the cultural management project contributed to consolidating the students' knowledge of the content covered and to increasing their confidence in preparing them for the labour market.
The integration of immigrant women farmers in Portugal: Reconnecting with nature through agriculture

Migrants play a vital role in revitalizing rural regions, contributing to demographic renewal, economic diversification, and cultural enrichment. Their involvement is particularly significant in sectors such as agriculture, where labour shortages and aging populations pose ongoing challenges. By bringing new skills, perspectives, and initiatives, migrants help sustain local economies and foster innovation. This study explores the experiences of five foreign women who have relocated to the Centre of Portugal, establishing new lives centred on agriculture and aims to understand the motivations behind migration, lifestyles, and the dynamics of integration. Through in-depth interviews and photographic and video documentation, the study highlights the women’s pursuit of a more sustainable, nature-connected existence, emphasizes the significance of the welcoming process and underlines the role of agriculture as a pathway to improved quality of life and social integration. It was clear that the integration process requires social inclusion, access to services, cultural exchange, and community engagement. O enfermeiro de família no acompanhamento à parentalidade : Desafios e estratégias de intervenção

Introdução: A família é reconhecida como a unidade básica da sociedade e desempenha um papel central na promoção da saúde e do bem-estar dos seus membros, constituindo o primeiro espaço de socialização, aprendizagem e desenvolvimento humano. A parentalidade, enquanto transição crítica do ciclo vital familiar, implica alterações profundas na dinâmica conjugal e parental, exigindo redefinição de papéis, reorganização de projetos de vida e reconfiguração de limites relacionais com a família e a comunidade. Este período, simultaneamente desafiante e potenciador de crescimento, traduz-se em necessidades acrescidas de suporte, de modo a garantir a adaptação saudável e a promoção de práticas de parentalidade positiva. Objetivos: Avaliar as famílias em transição para a parentalidade de acordo com o Modelo Dinâmico de Avaliação e Intervenção Familiar (MDAIF), identificar as necessidades emergentes em cada uma das suas dimensões, estabelecer planos de intervenção ajustados às singularidades de cada família e monitorizar os ganhos em saúde. Métodos: O estudo de caso múltiplo teve por base a matriz operativa do MDAIF, que integra dimensões estruturais, de desenvolvimento e funcionais da família, associadas a instrumentos de avaliação como o genograma, o ecomapa, a escala de Graffar adaptada, o FACES II e o APGAR Familiar. Participaram quatro famílias inscritas na lista de utentes da enfermeira tutora, selecionadas segundo critérios previamente definidos: grávidas com idade gestacional igual ou superior a 34 semanas e/ou famílias com crianças até seis meses à data de 01.10.2024. Todas as famílias consentiram, por escrito, a sua participação no estudo Family2Care. A recolha de dados decorreu entre outubro de 2024 e janeiro de 2025, através de visitas domiciliárias, consultas de saúde infantil e sessões de educação em grupo, complementadas pela Entrevista Familiar Sistémica (EFS). Resultados: As intervenções implementadas promoveram ganhos em saúde nas quatro famílias acompanhadas, através da capacitação para a mobilização de recursos internos e externos, do reforço das competências parentais e da promoção de vínculos afetivos seguros. A análise dos casos demonstrou que, embora inicialmente tivesse sido identificado o diagnóstico de “Papel Parental Não Adequado”, a intervenção sistemática do enfermeiro de família contribuiu para a sua evolução para “Papel Parental Adequado”, refletindo-se em maior confiança, autonomia e consistência disciplinar. Destaca-se ainda o papel do suporte intergeracional, sobretudo dos avós, e a relevância da articulação comunitária no fortalecimento da resiliência familiar. Conclusão: O estudo de caso múltiplo e o MDAIF demonstrou ser uma abordagem metodológica valiosa para a enfermagem de saúde familiar (ESF), permitindo identificar padrões comuns, compreender singularidades e implementar intervenções eficazes, personalizadas e culturalmente adaptadas. Os resultados confirmam o papel estratégico do enfermeiro de família na promoção da parentalidade positiva, reforçando a sua função enquanto facilitador de competências parentais, mediador das relações familiares e articulador de redes de suporte, no âmbito dos Cuidados de Saúde Primários (CSP).
