- Adding Space and Senses to Mobile World ExplorationPublication . Silva, Maria João; Gomes, Cristina Azevedo; Pestana, Bruno; Lopes, João Correia; Marcelino, Maria José; Gouveia, Cristina; Fonseca, AlexandraMobile technologies can facilitate collaboration and knowledge creation in diverse educational contexts, enabling children to become actors in participation processes all around the world. Based on the lessons learned in various research projects, this chapter argues that adding spatial and sensory information augments the affordances of mobile world exploration by primary school children. This chapter starts by introducing a framework that relates technology, education, society and environment and by analysing the significance of space and senses in children’s literacy and mobile learning applications. It goes on to examine the advances in ICT for the development of multisensory georeferenced exploration and communication activities in the context of collaborative learning. The experience of the SchoolSenses@Internet project that developed, tested and used a mobile application for creating georeferenced multisensory messages within diverse collaborative learning contexts is presented. The design and the implementation process of the application are outlined and the lessons learned are identified and summarized. Finally some conclusions are drawn and issues for further research indicated.
- Gender Dynamics in STEM Education: Students and Pre-Service Teachers’ VoicesPublication . Ferreira, Eduarda; Silva, Maria João; Azevedo Gomes, CristinaBuilding on previous research on ICT and gender, this paper explores the interrelations between gender and STEM in educational contexts in Portugal. The research aims to improve the understanding of the co-production of gender and STEM careers and to develop strategies to promote gender equity in STEM. The methodology was based on a structured workshop divided into five phases (representations, facts analysis, causes and impacts, attitudes, and strategies), each designed to address a critical aspect of the intersection of gender and STEM. Aligned with an advocacy/participatory framework, this methodology empowers participants to actively engage in the dialogue on gender equity in STEM and take meaningful actions toward fostering more inclusive environments. The study involved two distinct populations: pre-service elementary school teachers from a higher education institution and ninth-grade students. This selection was based on prior research emphasizing the influence of elementary teachers’ attitudes toward gender and STEM careers on students’ educational choices, which are made at the end of ninth grade in the Portuguese education system. The results indicated differences in the representations and attitudes of ninth-grade students and pre-service teachers regarding the gender gap in STEM, as well as variations in how girls and boys perceive and approach this issue.
- Unpacking Higher Education Students’ Relationship with AIPublication . Ferreira, Eduarda; Valente, Bianor; Antunes, Ana Cristina; Gama, Ana; Silva, Maria João; Xavier, PaulaThis exploratory study examines higher education students’ engagement with Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in Portuguese polytechnic institutions. Based on survey data from 171 students, the research analyzes usage patterns, motivations, perceived barriers, ethical concerns, and self-assessed competence. ChatGPT emerged as the most widely used tool, primarily for grammar correction, drafting texts, and summarizing articles. Students reported strong motivations linked to productivity and academic support, while concerns centered on information reliability, academic integrity, and data privacy. Although most students expressed moderate confidence in using AI, only 53% showed interest in formal training. Ethical engagement was evident through cautious use and information verification, yet formal practices such as citation were inconsistently applied. The findings highlight both the opportunities and challenges of AI use in academic contexts and underscore the need for inclusive, equity-driven educational strategies. Future research will explore how gender influences AI engagement and ethical awareness in higher education.
