ABSTRACT Domestic violence is a behavior that takes all forms of abuse that occur in relations between members of the family and it is also a wide transversal phenomenon in society, where professional security forces (PFS) have an increasing role in helping the victims and preventing this type of crime. The stereotype, beliefs and myths about violence rooted in contemporary society are generally false, but widely persistent tend to minimize, deny or justify aggression by the perpetrator. Reflecting, analyzing and demystifying beliefs are essential to understand the prejudices and attitudes in society towards the crime of domestic violence. The PFS are a fundamental piece in the mechanism of violence, therefore being also members of society share the same attitudes and beliefs as others. Given this ambiguity is relevant to know the beliefs about the crime of domestic violence. The purpose of this project is to know the beliefs of domestic violence and the difficulties experienced by PFS when facing such situations. In order to attain that purpose, we used two methods: a survey specifically created and the Scale of beliefs of matrimonial violence (ECVC) written by (Machado, Matos & Gonçalves, 2008). The results achieved with ECVC showed us a lack of significant differences in the full length of the scale and all of the subscales with the exception of the subscale “Legitimation of violence for its attribution to external causes” in older individuals and in the male gender.
