Abstract(s)
A qualidade

Abstract Introduction: Family affects the individual health of each of its members, interferes in its dynamics and influences mental health. Objectives: To assess the mental health in families in the interior of Portugal during the COVID 19 pandemic; to identify the determining factors that interfere with the mental health of families and to characterise the influence of family relationships on the mental health of their members. Methodology: Quantitative, descriptive, and correlational study, with a sample of 134 individuals from 134 households, age between 22 and 67 years (M=42.28 years±7.90), 77.6% are female and 74.6% live in urban areas. Results: On mental health assessment, they show more positive results in terms of emotional ties, loss of emotional/behavioural control, psychological distress, and anxiety. They showed worse mental health status in terms of depression, positive affection and psychological well being. Male and older individuals tend to have better mental health, as well as those with better living conditions. The quality of sleep, the duration of physical activity and a good perception of current health status tend to be indicators for better mental health. Participants in nuclear families tended to show better mental health in terms of emotional ties than those in single parent families. Individuals with a higher family APGAR and with greater social support tend to have better mental health. Conclusion: Mental health is influenced by age, gender, place of residence, type of housing, type of family, family APGAR, social support, quality of sleep, duration of physical activity and the perception of health status. Being aware of the living conditions, physical, social, cultural, and socio-economic environment of families is essential for good practice in community nursing. Keywords: Mental health, family, determinants.
