ABSTRACT: In this dissertation, several laboratory tests using remoulded samples were executed, with the purpose of characterizing the tailings behaviour. Two different procedures for determining the density of solid particles techniques were compared, trying to understand their advantages and applicability to the tailings. Besides the characterization, this work includes a study about the existing techniques for reconstitution of samples for triaxial testing. Furthermore, a new technique was developed, with the purpose of creating samples capable of reproducing the tailings characteristics in the deposition sites. Additionally, the possibilities of determining the tailings permeability during the execution of triaxial tests were analysed.
