Abstract(s)
Disorder Scale – Short-Form (Pontes & Griffiths, 2016).
In the last years, we have seen a dizzying evolution of technology and the new generations make constant use of electronic devices and internet to various purposes, including communication and entertainment. Videogames, specially, online games are one of the favorite hobbies of young people. Despite several positive aspects associated with this activity, such as cognitive development and even social interaction, it isn´t free from risks, like videogames addition, already considered a mental illness by the World Health Organization. In addition, several studies show the negative impact that videogames can have on the children and adolescents psychosocial adjustment, behavior and socialization. In fact, the relationship established with technology may interfere with the quality of relationships and vice versa. Social support takes a key role in the adolescents development and well-being, with family support and support from friends particularly important for successful adaptation to this stage of life cycle. In this sense, the present project aims to study the relationship between videogames addition and perception of satisfaction with social support in adolescents. The sample is composed of 135 students from the 3rd cycle and secondary education, from a high school in the central region, surveyed through a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Social Support Satisfaction Scale (Ribeiro, 2011) and the Portuguese Internet Gaming Disorder Scale - Short-Form (Pontes & Griffiths, 2016). The results of this study reveal that there is a relationship between videogame addiction and family support satisfaction, which are the male adolescents who present a greater degree of dependence on videogames and that the retentions in the school course are not correlated neither with the behaviors of dependence to videogames nor with the perception of satisfaction with the social support.
