Abstract(s)

Abstract Background: Pregnancy is a time where the woman experiences a set of modifications. So that the pregnant woman can experience each step of her pregnancy, she needs to acquire information, which allows her to develop the capacity of decision making, i.e., the Empowerment. Objectives: Identify the socio demographic and of obstetrician context variables that affect the pregnant woman empowerment in the last trimester of pregnancy; determine the influence of literacy in the pregnant woman empowerment. Methods: Non-experimental, transversal, quantitative and correlational study with a non-probabilistic for convenience composed by 264 pregnant women in the third trimester. The data collection was carried out by applying a questionnaire consisting of sociodemographic questions, obstetric data, HLS-EU-PT scale (National School of Public Health, 2014) adapted for pregnant women by Ferreira et al. (2017) and Pregnancy Empowerment Scale (Kameda & Shimada, 2008) adapted by Ferreira et al. (2013). Results: The pregnant woman’s manifest a health empowerment level as intermediate (40, 9%), low and high (29, 5%). Health empowerment is influenced by family income (p=0,001),pregnancy planning (p=0,045) and frequency or intention of attending the preparation course for childbirth and parenting (p=0,045). Healthcare (t=4,258;p=0,000), Health promotion (t=3,564;p=0,000) and age of pregnancy (t=2,345;p=0,020) predict health empowerment. Conclusion: The pregnant woman’s empowerment is determined by her acquired knowledge and lived or shared experiences, which may be influenced by extrinsic and intrinsic factors to the pregnant woman. Pre-natal health assistance appears as the empowering’s promotor, being the maternal health and obstetrician specialist nurse a crucial element in the pregnant woman’s empowering, given its specific formation, who places the woman in the centre of his/her care throughout all his/her cycle of life. Key-words: pregnant woman’s empowerment, health literacy, pregnancy supervision.
