Abstract(s)

Abstract Background: Post-partum is expected to be a time of joy. However, it is not always so, as it can be a time marked by moments of sadness, fatigue and discouragement. Recognizing the advantages of breastfeeding for health and well-being of both the new-born baby and the mother, we believe that it can be a deterrent of post-partum depression. Objectives: To obtain scientific evidence in order to understand if breastfeeding has a preventive effect against post-partum depression. Method: We made an integrative review of the literature on the relationship between breastfeeding and postpartum depression through databases: EBSCO host, LILACS, PubMed, SciELO, Institutional Repositories and Google Scholar. Fifteen articles that met the inclusion criteria of this study were selected. Results: Most of the studies identified breastfeeding as preventive of postpartum depression, highlighting the importance of breastfeeding for the mental health of postpartum women and consequently reducing the chances of developing postpartum depression. Five articles identify it also as a risk factor and one study did not found a clear association between breastfeeding and postpartum depression. Conclusions: Several benefits of breastfeeding were described with a preventive effect against post-partum depression. A woman informed and supported about breastfeeding will be able to feel confident in her new role. A constant investment by the health team, initiated during the process of family planning for pregnancy, and keeping throughout pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum is essential.
