comunidade local.
To mitigate the environmental impacts resulting from human activities, it is necessary to promote the Circular Economy, so that discarded materials can be directed to new production processes and reused, contributing to closing the production cycle. Given that the textile sector, and the fashion industry in particular, is one of the sectors associated with high environmental impacts, the legal framework for textile waste management in the European Union and, consequently, in Portugal, reinforces the need to increase the separate collection and subsequent recovery of this waste, processes in which individuals’ environmental literacy plays a relevant role. The school environment provides a privileged context for developing these concepts, given its potential to promote environmental awareness and education, particularly among young people. Accordingly, this study aimed to promote the reduction and recovery of textile waste within a school community through the implementation of strategies based on the principles of the circular economy and the living labs concept, fostering environmental literacy and the adoption of sustainable reuse and upcycling practices in the school environment. The school community selected for this study was that of the Albergaria-a Velha Secondary School (ESAAV). Initially, an assessment of waste management practices was conducted, followed by the administration of a survey to assess the environmental literacy of the educational community regarding the topic under study and their receptiveness to the implementation of an upcycling laboratory, CircularTEX – Innovation Hub for Textile Waste Circularity, followed by the development of a Best Practices Manual. The results revealed high levels of awareness within the educational community regarding the impact of textile waste, as well as a positive attitude toward reusing and recovering these materials. Nevertheless, gaps were identified concerning separate waste collection and awareness of existing collection systems within the school environment. Participants expressed interest in implementing separate collection infrastructure, conducting awareness-raising activities, and launching upcycling initiatives, demonstrating strong support for circular economy projects at the school. Consequently, they collaborated to create "CircularTEX" in response to the identified needs and as an opportunity to promote sustainability and environmental education. This initiative contributed to waste reduction and extended the useful life of textile materials, while strengthening collaboration between the school and the local community. At the same time, it promoted the development of technical and transversal skills among participants, reinforcing experiential learning and raising awareness of more sustainable consumption practices. The Best Practices Manual supports the implementation of upcycling laboratories in other educational settings, as the model holds potential as a tool for sustainability education and a replicable initiative.
