RESUMO
Enquadramento: O aleitamento materno é fundamental na promoção e proteção da
saúde infantil em todo o mundo. Além de biológico, constitui um ato regulado por diversos
fatores nos quais se destaca a influência das avós pela transmissão da sua herança cultural.
Justifica-se, assim, o trabalho “Amamentar. Quais os contributos das avós?”.
Objetivos: Compreender o fenómeno amamentar em mães portuguesas e
imigrantes; Identificar os contributos das avós na amamentação percecionados pelas mães
portuguesas e imigrantes.
Matérias e métodos: O estudo foi realizado no Agrupamento de Centros de Saúde
(ACES) Baixo Vouga II. Foram 40 as mulheres participantes, portuguesas e imigrantes, que
foram mães nos últimos seis meses, que se encontram a amamentar ou amamentaram os
filhos e que, aí, recorreram à consulta médica ou de Enfermagem. Na recolha e análise de
dados utilizou-se a entrevista semiestruturada e a análise de conteúdo com recurso ao
NVivo 9 respetivamente.
Resultados: Da análise construíram-se sete categorias: “Motivos para amamentar”;
“Vantagens do leite materno”; “Tipos de ajuda percecionados pelas mães relativos à
amamentação”; “Crenças e mitos face à amamentação”; “O envolvimento das avós na
educação dos netos”; “A avó dá bons conselhos” e “Influência das avós na decisão e
manutenção da amamentação”.
Conclusão: As mães sentem a influência das avós na amamentação das suas
crianças o que lhes transmite maior segurança e confiança nesta prática. Considera-se
fundamental que os enfermeiros promovam, protejam e apoiem o aleitamento materno não
só junto das puérperas mas também das famílias, nomeadamente das avós.

ABSTRACT Background: Breastfeeding is considered worldwide as being essential in the promotion and protection of child health. Besides being biological, it is an act regulated by several factors, among which the influence of grandmothers stands out due to the transmission of their cultural heritage. Therefore, the work “Breastfeeding. What are the contributions of grandmothers?” becomes more than justified. Objectives: To understand the breastfeeding phenomenon in Portuguese and immigrant mothers; to identify how the contribution of grandmothers in breastfeeding is perceived by Portuguese and immigrant mothers. Materials and methods: This study was developed in the Group Health Centre (ACES) Baixo Vouga II. The sample was composed by 40 female participants, both Portuguese and immigrant, who gave birth in the last six months and breastfed or were breastfeeding their children, having also attended a medical or nursing appointment. The semistructured interview was used in the collection of data and NVivo 9 was used in content analysis. Results: Due to content analysis seven categories were defined: “Reasons to breastfeed”; “Advantages of maternal milk”; “Types of help in breastfeeding that were perceived by mothers”; “Beliefs and myths related to breastfeeding”; “Grandmothers’ involvement in grandchildren’s education”; “Grandmother gives good advice” and “The influence of grandmothers in deciding and maintaining breastfeeding”. Conclusion: Mothers feel the influence of grandmothers in breastfeeding, which gives them a greater feeling of security and trust in this practice. It is understood as fundamental that nurses promote, protect and support maternal breastfeeding not only with women who have recently given birth but also with their families, namely grandmothers.
