Abstract(s)
This project aims to assess the perception of young people with and without disabilities about themselves and others, as dancers of inclusive dance. A study was carried out with the group “Dançando com a Diferença”, from Viseu, with 30 participants. A mixed, quantitative and qualitative methodology was used, which included the Portuguese versions of the Contour Drawing Rating Scale (Thompson & Gray, 1995) and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965) as data collection instruments. as well as a questionnaire survey, built for this purpose, on the subject under study. The data obtained were subject to descriptive and inferential statistical analysis, as well as content analysis of the participants' speeches. Regarding the results of the research, we found that the sample has self-esteem values above the average M=31.46±3.53 and, in terms of body image, the average discrepancy between the ideal appearance and the current one was M=1.03±2.2. Regarding the differential analyzes in the groups of participants, it is observed that the values of self-esteem are higher in the female gender, although the difference is not statistically significant, t(26)=0.956, p=.348, and the differences in body image, as a function of gender, they were not significant (χ2 (2)=3,117, p =.267). The result of self-esteem in young people without disabilities was higher; however, the difference was not statistically significant, t(26)=0.591, p=.560; also with regard to body image, the difference is not significant (χ2 (2) = 0.321, p=.784). Regarding the perceptions of young “dancers” about participation in the inclusive dance group, the emergence of four relevant categories stands out, “Determination”, “Participation”, “Improvisation” and “Purpose”. Regarding the subcategories, “dancing” and “inclusion” emerged as the most frequent, followed by “belonging” and “art/creating”. This type of inclusive dance projects emphasize the potential of artistic activities, at the level of dance, conducive to changing the social image of people with disabilities, as being participatory and competent in contexts that promote their self-esteem, personal image and self-determination
