Abstract Introduction Aiming at maximum efficiency through the development of ethical, human, technical and scientific capabilities acquired in carrying out internships in the context of urgency and intensive care for a more qualified Medical-Surgical Nursing approach and care provided based on scientific evidence. Objective: To portray the process of acquisition and development of competencies in Medical-Surgical Nursing. Methods: It is divided into part I, where the common and specific skills of medical-surgical nursing acquired in the respective internships and the activities carried out are outlined. Part II is presented in the form of an article, a scoping review – Nursing interventions in aspiration of secretions in clients with invasive mechanical ventilation invasive. Results: It is a document that intends to systematize, organize and interpret the many lessons learned. The investigation carried out allowed the development of knowledge that I hope to transpose into daily practice. Aspiration of secretions is a procedure widely used by nurses, but there is little reliable and recent evidence on the subject. This investigation will make it possible to gather the aforementioned safe and recent evidence to make it possible to develop a protocol for aspiration of secretions in clients with invasive mechanical ventilation. Conclusion: The acquisition of new skills, knowledge and skills throughout this journey is assumed as the matrix of change in my personal construction of a specialist nurse. The investigation demonstrates that it is necessary to increase the level of knowledge of nurses and standardize practices to provide safer and higher quality care to clients with invasive mechanical ventilation, with regard to aspiration of secretions. Keywords: Aspiration of secretions; mechanical ventilation; probe caliber; pressure level; nursing
