Introdução: O envelhecimento populacional constitui um desafio em saúde pública, aumentando a procura por cuidados de longa duração e na relevância das Estruturas Residenciais para Pessoas Idosas (ERPI). Neste contexto, os cuidadores formais desempenham um papel central na prestação de cuidados à pessoa idosa, sendo a capacitação determinante para a qualidade, segurança e humanização dos cuidados.
Objetivos: Identificar necessidades formativas dos cuidadores formais e avaliar o impacto da intervenção formativa, de acordo com as necessidades identificadas.
Material e Métodos: Desenvolveu-se um estudo de investigação-ação, de abordagem quantitativa, no âmbito do projeto “Cuidar em Rede: Capacitação para Cuidadores Formais”, que surgiu da identificação de necessidades formativas. Foi implementada uma intervenção formativa dirigida a cuidadores formais de três ERPI de um concelho da região centro de Portugal, envolvendo trinta cuidadores formais. Para avaliação, aplicaram-se instrumentos de colheita de dados e questionários pré e pós-intervenção. O projeto obteve parecer favorável da Comissão de Ética do Instituto Politécnico de Viseu.
Resultados: O levantamento de necessidades identificou lacunas formativas nos cuidados básicos, prevenção de riscos, comunicação e cuidados em fim de vida. Após a intervenção, verificaram-se diferenças estatisticamente significativas em doze das catorze questões de conhecimento e em três das quinze questões de perceção avaliadas.
Conclusão: O projeto revelou-se eficaz na promoção do conhecimento, reforçando a importância da formação para a qualidade e segurança dos cuidados. Recomenda-se a continuidade e replicação noutras ERPI, bem como a criação de materiais de apoio para a integração de profissionais e a uniformização de boas práticas.

Abstract Introduction: Population ageing represents a public health challenge, increasing the demand for long-term care and the relevance of Residential Care Facilities for Older People (RCFOP). In this context, formal caregivers play a central role in providing care to older adults, and their training is essential to ensure the quality, safety, and humanization of care. Objectives: To identify the training needs of formal caregivers and to evaluate the impact of a training intervention according to the identified needs. Materials and Methods: An action research study with a quantitative approach was developed within the project “Caring in Network: Training for Formal Caregivers”, which emerged from the identification of training needs. A training intervention was implemented for formal caregivers from three RCFOP in a municipality in central Portugal, involving thirty participants. Data collection instruments and pre- and post-intervention questionnaires were applied for evaluation purposes. The project received a favorable opinion from the Ethics Committee of the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu. Results: The needs assessment identified training gaps in basic care, risk prevention, communication, and end-of-life care. Following the intervention, statistically significant differences were observed in twelve of the fourteen knowledge-related questions and in three of the fifteen perception-related questions assessed. Conclusion: The project proved effective in promoting knowledge, reinforcing the importance of training for improving the quality and safety of care. The continuation and replication of the project in other RCFOP are recommended, as well as the development de supporting materials to facilitate staff integration and the standardization of best practices.
