Abstract(s)
online.
ABSTRACT: This Research reflects the curricular internship that was held at the Regional Tourism Authority of the Center of Portugal (ERTCP). The internship took place for six months starting on November 2, 2021, and ending on April 29, 2022, at the Tourism Investment Support Division (NAIT) where various activities were performed, mainly focused on monitoring regional and sub-regional tourist activities, as well as on the development of the Center Sustainable Tourism Observatory. The events, that take place in the Central Region of Portugal, are the focus of this research, constituting one of the most important sectors of global tourism and, according to the literature, capable of generating impressive impacts, at an economic, social, cultural, and environmental level. Nonetheless, the events sector in the last two years (2020 and 2021) went through a very difficult phase due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 disease, declared as a pandemic. The objective of the study is to understand the importance of events in the Central Region of Portugal and to understand the impact of the pandemic on events. In general, before the outbreak of the pandemic, the data demonstrate that events can be of enormous importance for a touristic destination, as they prove to be a good strategy to circumvent the seasonality period of a destination and have the ability to attract a large number of visitors, a reality that can be seen in the number of overnight stays in touristic accommodation and in the increase in purchases of local services. As an example, in 2017 the central region had the highest occupancy rate to date, around 34.3% (INE, 2018), due to the visit of Pope Francis to FƔtima. From the moment the effects of the pandemic and the associated movement restrictions were felt, the impact on this sector was extremely negative, as most events were cancelled, but it is worth mentioning the redefinition of some events that adopted new methods to present themselves, namely through online exhibitions.
