- Ageism toward older adults among social education students: the impact of a photovoice programPublication . Araújo, Lia; Manuel Cid, Xosé; Sousa, LilianaThis study describes the design, implementation, and evaluation of a photovoice program for Social Education students from a Polytechnic University in Portugal. The program was named ‘Ageism in Perspective’ and developed over six sessions during one semester. The design was based on principles of the original photovoice methodology, along with previous experiences of photovoice as an active and experiential learning methodology in higher education. Implementation included theoretical- pedagogical and ethical activities about the methodology (photovoice) and the topic under exploration (ageism). It went practically-technologically through the process of taking and presenting photographs in the group/ classes, ending with a seminar and exhibition open to the community to share the main findings. Evaluation included a pre-posttest approach using the Negative Stereotypes Toward Aging Questionnaire (CENVE) and a final focus group addressing students’ overall experience with the program, the photovoice approach, and the impact on their perspectives about ageism. Participants (n = 45; mean age of 21.1, SD 4.1) were students of the second year in the degree course of Social Education. There was a statistically significant decrease in the CENVE score between the pre (30.1 ± 7.3) and the post (21.5 ± 4.0) test, meaning lower stereotypes after the program. Emerging themes from the focus group thematic analysis were (i) I am more willing to interact with older adults; (ii) Photovoice booster multiple perspectives and reflexivity; (iii) Becoming aware that ageism exists (even in myself). Findings suggest that photovoice is a good pedagogical tool to address students’ stereotypes about older adults, which should be as important as addressing the syllabus content.
- Automedicação em Jovens e Adultos da Região Centro de PortugalPublication . Amaral, Odete; Lages, Adriana; Sousa, Liliana; Almeida, Lúcia; Santos, Juliana; Dias, Mariana; Silva, Daniel; Pereira, CarlosResumo Introdução: A automedicação é uma prática frequente e, atualmente é um fenómeno em desenvolvimento crescente. Os objetivos deste estudo foram estimar a prevalência da automedicação em jovens e adultos da região centro de Portugal, caracterizar a prática de automedicação e identificar fatores associados à automedicação. Métodos: Realizámos um estudo analítico e transversal. A colheita de dados foi efetuada com recurso a um questionário, autoaplicado e respondido online, a indivíduos residentes na região centro de Portugal com idades ≥ 16 anos. A amostra ficou constituída por 182 indivíduos, com uma média de idades de 33,88±12,62 anos, sendo a maioria do género feminino (66,5%). As prevalências foram expressas em percentagens. Para comparação de proporções utilizou-se o teste qui quadrado e a magnitude de associação entre um fator e a condição foi estimada através do cálculo do odds ratios, com os respetivos intervalos de confiança a 95%. Resultados: Verificámos que a prevalência de automedicação ao longo da vida foi de 85,7%, e, nos últimos 6 meses, de 85,9%. A maioria da amostra (50,3%) referiu que pratica automedicação por iniciativa própria, sendo os medicamentos mais utilizados os analgésicos (78,8%) e os anti-inflamatórios (54,5%), salientando que 7,1% dos indivíduos referiu que se automedica com antibióticos. O local de aquisição mais frequente dos medicamentos foi a farmácia (82,5%) e, grande parte dos indivíduos (92,3%), afirma ter conhecimento dos riscos dos medicamentos. A prática da automedicação associou-se com a idade (≤ 25 anos OR=1,28; IC95% 1,16-1,41) e com o agregado familiar com filhos (OR=4,77; IC95% 1,94-11,71). Conclusão: Concluímos que a automedicação é uma prática muito frequente entre os jovens e adultos da região centro de Portugal, associando-se a idades mais jovens e aos agregados familiares com filhos.
- Eyes on the pandemic: using photovoice in group and remotely with social professionals of aged care facilitiesPublication . In Portugal, social workers are key frontline professionals in aged care services. A photovoice program called “Eyes on the Pandemic” was carried out to capture the internal experiences of frontline social workers working in aged care services during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Photovoice is a qualitative, participatory action-research method in which participants share key experiences of their lives through photographs and narratives (voices) presented and discussed with others. Thirteen social workers between 24 and 41 years old participated. This article describes the planning, implementation, and evaluation of this project. The findings suggest that the social workers’ experiences were defined by a reinvention of intervention, the maintenance of a balance between personal and professional life, the crucial importance of teamwork, management of the pandemic repercussions on older people’s well-being, and encounters with the uncertain future. The results illuminate the lived experience of the COVID- 19 pandemic inside aged care facilities and could inform practices and policies by consolidating lessons learned during this difficult period. The benefits of attending the program referred by the participants, lead to conclude that photovoice proved to be a good group intervention tool.
- Gerontological social workers’ perspectives about the future at the start of a COVID-19 vaccination program: A photovoice studyPublication . Dias, Sofia Fontoura; Araújo, Lia; Sousa, LilianaSummary: The COVID-19 pandemic is a continuing public health crisis, although it has lessened in its intensity since the start of worldwide vaccination programs. In aged care facilities, gerontological social workers have become frontline professionals facing multiple challenges and demands. One year after the first COVID-19 case in Portugal, during the second major lockdown in the country, and with vaccination starting in these facilities, a photovoice program to identify the experiences of these professionals was developed. This study aimed to understand how gerontological social workers foresee the future of practice and intervention with older adults. A thematic analysis was conducted based on the photographs and associated narratives from 10 participants, all female, aged between 22 and 35 years, who attended a program’s session. Findings: Three themes were identified with the thematic analysis: (1) personal and professional growth (with renewed life perspectives and increased resilience), (2) reinvention of intervention (with improved management of emotions, teamwork, and alternative ways of intervening), and (3) hope to use the lessons learned (hope that vaccination will bring conditions to recover the older adults’ well-being and opportunities to use the good les- sons learned). Applications: These findings are relevant to inform policymakers and governments about practices in aged care facilities and to improve the training of gerontological social workers in acute action management and intervention. We stress alternative ways of inter- vening that came up in the response to the pandemic such as emotional management, digital technology, communication strategies, self-care, or the families’ involvement.
- Intervenção em respostas sociais para pessoas mais velhas durante a pandemia: Das experiências do passado às perspetivas para o futuroPublication . Araújo, Lia; Dias, Sofia; Marques, Carolinne; Cid, Xosé; Sousa, LilianaO programa de photovoice intitulado "Eyes on the Pandemic" foi desenvolvido após um ano de pandemia COVID-19 com Educadores Sociais a trabalhar em respostas sociais para pessoas idosas com o objetivo de explorar as suas experiências e perspectivas. Este estudo descreve o programa e os resultados, incluindo a descrição da experiência dos profissionais durante o ano de pandemia; e a sua perspetiva sobre o impacto do programa e da metodologia. Ao longo de sete sessões, 13 Educadores Sociais partilharam, com recurso a foto- grafias tiradas por si e apresentadas em grupo, uma experiência caracterizada pela (i) resposta imediata à pandemia, (ii) desenvolvimento profissional e pessoal, (iii) trabalho de equipa e (iv) olhos no futuro. O Photovoice (metodologia) teve benefícios ao nível do sentido de comunidade, conhecimento, valorização profissional e esperança. Este estudo realça o papel dos profissionais de intervenção social na linha da frente da pandemia e o contributo desta experiência para o seu crescimento e mudanças no futuro da intervenção. Dados os bene- fícios apontados pelos participantes, sugere-se a aposta nesta metodologia, nomeadamente com outros públicos (e.g., outros profissionais, incluindo os não qualificados, e pessoas mais velhas, utentes).
- The Use of Photovoice with the LGBTQIA + Community: A Systematic ReviewPublication . Pinheiro, Daniela; Araújo, Lia; Sousa, LilianaPhotovoice is a community-based participatory action research method used with vulnerable groups, being LGBTQIAþone of the groups addressed. This systematic review aims to understand the use of photovoice with members of the LGBTQIAþ community. We searched for literature across five databases and performed a quality assessment and narrative synthesis. The main findings, based on 39 included studies, show that: (1) the topics focus the intersection of LGBTQIAþ, race/ethnicity, and other vulnerabilities; (2) the photovoice method comprised more individual interviews, and less involvement of audiences; (3) photovoice advantages involve the open expression, while limitations were maintaining some closure about some issues.
- “We Will Never be The Same”: Photovoice Reports From Social Workers of Aged Care During COVID-19Publication . Araújo, Lia; Fontoura, Sofia; Cid‑Fernández, Xosé Manuel; Sousa, LilianaUsing photovoice methodology, this study aimed to capture the perspectives of social workers from aged care services on how the pandemic impacted them at a professional level. This study comprised 12 social workers (aged 22– 41 years; 11 females) who worked in aged care facilities during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on photovoice methodology, as a participatory visual research method focused on individual and community assets and co-creation of knowledge, participants were asked to take photographs and then share the photos and associated narratives in a group session on the topic “Me as a professional: One year of pandemic”. From the thematic analysis, four themes emerged: personal and professional growth (increased resilience, with new perspectives on life), responding to the pandemic (implementation of immediate actions to prevent the virus propagation), teamwork (union among staff), and eyes on the future (with a sense of uncertainty, yet supported by the good lessons learned). The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has had a significant impact on aged care facilities, with social workers becoming frontline professionals in a public health crisis. These professionals faced “forced growth” during the pandemic that has transformed them both professionally and personally.
