- Comunicação e Intencionalidade: Possibilidades da Comunicação Intencional como Experiência da ExterioridadePublication . Barroso, PauloHow can we communicate intentions? What one means when one uses a certain expression about his inner states, like “I have a pain”? What “understand someone” means? These are some of many others questions that we have to underline when we pretend analyse the importance of normal and ordinary linguistic productions. Questions that help us to understand the use, production and functionalism of ordinary language. However, there are others communication manners, like intra-personal communication processes? The main focus of this paper is about the proficiency and use of ordinary language. Thus, this paper intends to present a theoretical analysis between language, inner states (thought, sensation, perception, feeling, etc.) and reality. Trilogy as a complex system organizing experiences into meaningful structures, considering some issues: i) language of thought (or intra-communication); ii) semantic inter-subjectivity; iii) inter-translated languages to explore the interactive conception; iv) mental and linguistic construction of reality; v) conceptual pathologies of language; and vi) expressive act of meaning. In this paper, the basic approach embraces the analysis of a simple semiotic concept, is that of meaning, considering the language’s difficulties and proficiencies to represent (describe or express) the world (as individual mental construction). It seems to me obvious that a great many of the things that we say (and understand from what is said) we say (and understand) because we learn them in conversation with others, in which it is the intention of the interlocutors to inform of something. Based on Grice’s work, i shall argue that it is also important what isn’t said when it is said, beyond what is said when it is not said.
- A capa congénita da subjectividade: o jornalista entre o interlocutor do acontecimento e o construtor socialPublication . Barroso, PauloIn journalism studies, we learn that the objectivity is always analyzed as compass to the suitable exercise of the informative activity. The objectivity myth works to hide the storyteller’s natural ethos and pathos. If who tells a story adds the story, the objectivity’s lie, that recommends the journalist to look for exactness, serves to demonstrate, at least, the inalienable true of the journalistic subjectivity. Which verbal exteriority to what happens, deserve to be told and to be socially constructed? Which point of view? Who decide what can be known? What’s the reality that isn’t communicated by the journalists?
- Experimental determination and computer fitting of desorption isotherms of D. Joaquina pears.Publication . Guiné, Raquel; Castro, JoséDesorption isotherms at different operating temperatures provide valuable information for the design and control of drying processes. In the present work the desorption isotherms of pears are determined according to two equivalent forms of the G.A.B. model at temperatures of 20, 25 and 30 ºC. These cover the range of summer average daily temperatures in Portugal, when the solar drying of pears is carried out. Two different computer fitting methodologies are used, namely, Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and Orthogonal Distance Regression (ODR), in order to evaluate the above mentioned forms of the G.A.B. model. From the results obtained it is possible to conclude that the ODR fitting is clearly more adequate than the OLS technique for this kind of experimental problem. Moreover, it is advisable to exploit the full form of the G.A.B. model instead of its simplified and restricted version. Finally, the desorption isotherms do not vary significantly in the temperature range under study.

- An easy way to Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 synthesisPublication . Cruz-Lopes, Luísa; Segadães, Ana M.; Rocha, João; Pedrosa De Jesus, Júlio D.This work describes the very expeditious combustion synthesis of Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 perovskite powders from mixtures of Pb(NO3)2, Mg(NO3)2·6H2O and Nb2O5, as cation precursors, and urea as fuel. The powders produced were characterized by XRD, SEM (EDS), and ICP and MAS NMR spectroscopies. Since, with this method, exposure to high temperatures is reduced to a minimum, the as-prepared combustion product shows no PbO loss. The % PMN in the as-prepared combustion powder is sensitive to, and increases with, the rise in the ignition temperature, and gets further improved upon calcination. However, the benefit of calcination, in terms of the reached maximum in the % PMN, becomes more modest when the ignition temperature is increased. Subsequent heat treatments of powder compacts in air (normal processing usually includes some kind of sintering step in order to improve crystallinity and densify the material), showed that over 90% Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 can be readily obtained at 870°C.
- Pear drying process analysis: Drying rates and evolution of water and sugar concentrations in space and time.Publication . Guiné, Raquel; Castro, JoséDried pears are produced in Portugal by a traditional solar drying process and, because they represent unquestionable regional economic interest, some studies are being conducted in order to convert their production to industrial drying methods. In this work the main mass transfer phenomena occurring during drying of pears are investigated. Experiments were carried out to determine the time evolution of the radial profiles of water and sugar content. The drying rates were also studied at constant drying temperatures of 30, 40 and 50 ºC. The results enable to conclude that the concentration profiles of water and sugar, both in space and time, follow an expected pattern if one takes into account the rates of water removal and the diffusion mechanisms. These also allow to explain why the sugar concentration increases in the periphery of the fruit. The drying rate curves obtained are typical, with the drying process at 30 ºC being more gradual but also much slower than that at 50 ºC.
- A policy-based approach to firewall managementPublication . Caldeira, Filipe; Monteiro, EdmundoThis paper describes a policy-based approach to firewall management. The Policy-Based Networking (PBN) architecture proposed by the Policy Framework Group of IETF is analysed, together with the communication protocols, policy specification languages, and the necessary information models. The paper continues with a description of an application of the PBN architecture to firewall management. The proposed architecture is presented and its implementation issues are analysed with some usage examples. The paper concludes with the evaluation of the policy-based approach to firewall management.
