Viseu, Floriano; Menezes, Luís; Fernandes, José António; Gomes, Alexandra; Martins, Paula MendesProof is an activity that plays a key role in the construction of mathematical knowledge, which is why it acquires relevance in mathematics programs. Admitting that teachers' conceptions about proof influence how it is handled in the classroom, we tried to investigate the conceptions of Portuguese mathematics teachers from the 3rd cycle of basic education (grade 7 to 9) on different aspects of mathematical proof and the relationship that the teachers’ experience has in these conceptions. Adopting a mixed methodological approach, we collected data through a questionnaire answered by 72 teachers, and an interview with two teachers with different professional experience. The results show that teachers, especially those with less experience, consider that mathematical proof has a distinct nature from other disciplines, it is an essential activity for the construction of mathematical knowledge and its function is to verify and explain the truth of a statement by developing reasoning and mathematical communication. With respect to student participation in the activity of proving, teachers with more teaching experience are the ones that most highlight it, which allows students to realize the nature of this activity. In curriculum terms, teachers with less experience are the ones that most agree with the presence of proof in early grades, while emphasizing that this activity only makes sense in some program topics.
- Negative life events and resilience in higher education studentsPublication . Gonçalves, Amadeu Matos; Cabral, Lídia do Rosário; Ferreira, Manuela da Conceição; Martins, Maria da Conceição; Duarte, João CarvalhoAbstract: Resilience is the capacity to overcome life adversities in a positive and constructive manner. The transition from high school to a higher education degree might function as an enhancer of crises and vulnerabilities. Negative Life Events (NLE) constitute any adverse circumstances against human development, possibly threatening the individual’s equilibrium. Our aim was to study how negative life events affect the resilience of higher education students, and to identify certain socio-demographic, family and academic variables, as well as negative life events they may have endured. A quantitative study based on a descriptive design sampled 382 students from a higher education institute in Portugal. In order to assess the proposed variables, Wagnild and Young’s Scale of Resilience (1993) which was adapted for the Portuguese population by Carvalho and Pereira (2012) and the Negative Life Events Inventory (Gonçalves, 2014) was utilised. We found significant relationships between the capacity for resilience and age, marital status, area of residence, school, and the use of drugs. Regarding life events, the dimensions “Neglect”, “Separation/Loss” and “Friend Satisfaction” were found to be strong predictors of resilience capacity. The results obtained show that higher negative life events indicate a student is better able to be self-sufficient and self-confident and have higher resilience. These results lead us to propose interventions which may facilitate the students’ ability to overcome their problems.
- Latvian consumers eating motivationsPublication . Kalnina, I.; Straumite, E.; Klava, D.; Kruma, Z.; Guiné, RaquelThe society’s dietary habits make an important impact on overall health status, the food that are consumed daily can be one of factors that prevent or, on the contrary, intensify health issues. The aim of this research was to find out the factors that influence food choice of Latvian citizens. In the survey there was studied Latvian citizen’s eating motivation. The questionnaire was used as a basic tool which was completed by 240 respondents (80% female and 20% male) from different Latvia regions. The survey included ten parts – demographical information, anthropometric data and behavioural and health related elements, healthy food and sources of information about healthy eating, factors related to food choices according to healthy motivations, emotional motivations, economic and availability motivations, social and cultural motivations, environmental and political motivations, marketing and commercials motivations. The results of questionnaire show, that the 40% of respondents have motivation to eat healthy; Latvian citizens haven’t united viewpoint regarding emotional motivations for eating, but 47% of respondents have economic motivations for different food purchases; 44% of respondents are motivated by social and cultural issues, 32% of respondents have political motivations in food choice, but only 31% of respondents are affected by different marketing actions. This research was prepared in the ambit of the multinational project from CI&DETS Research Centre (IPV e Viseu, Portugal) with reference PROJ/CI&DETS/2016/0008: EATMOT.
Rodrigues, Cátia; Menezes, Luís; Ponte, João PedroIn this paper we analyze the learning dynamics of a group of five middle school teachers that took place in a lesson study during the elaboration and analysis of a diagnostic task. Specifically, we aim to analyze the changes that occurred in the teachers’ didactical knowledge, notably in their curriculum knowledge, knowledge of students and in their learning processes, and knowledge of teaching practice. Data were collected by participant observation, with audio recording of the sessions, collection of participants’ written documents, and by making a research journal. The results suggest that the elaboration and analysis of a diagnostic task during the lesson study, through a reflexive process, gave the teachers na opportunity to develop didactical knowledge about curriculum guidelines for the specific content, students’ thinking, tasks, and the role of diferente representations for learning rational numbers. This work also allowed the teachers to change their knowledge about the students and, more specifically, about their real capacity, leading the teachers to value the positive aspects of their students’ solutions and not only attend to their difficulties.
Menezes, Luís; Viseu, Floriano; Ribeiro, António; Flores, PabloThis paper reports an investigation to know how Portuguese teachers, who teach mathematics, from primary to higher education, use humor in their classes and why they do it. For this, we applied a questionnaire to teachers of continental Portugal, having obtained 601 responses. The collected data were submitted to quantitative and qualitative analysis. The results show that teachers consider teaching mathematics compatible with the use of humor. Consistent with this, teachers say they regularly use humor to teach mathematics, with the primary goal of creating a climate that facilitates learning (affective function), but also for the purpose of teaching mathematical topics (cognitive function).
- Development of nutritive snacks: kiwi barsPublication . Guiné, Raquel; Seabra, SaloméPresently there is an increasing concern about not wasting any type of product with potential commercial utility, like food waste. Thus, this work was undertaken in collaboration with a company in order to find a nutritionally interesting form of valorisation of kiwi waste, namely the pulp from fruits not compliant with commercial standards (like size or shape). Based on the proposed aims, kiwi based snacks (bars) were developed from kiwi pulp with the addition of gelling agents and some other ingredients. The product development was an intensive task, with multiple experiments until the desired characteristics could be achieved. Because the company intends to commercialize the bars it was also necessary to make a sensory evaluation, to assess the opinion about the developed product(s). Two final products were obtained: a simple kiwi bar and a bar with nuts and oat. Based on the results obtained it was possible to conclude that, at the nutritional level, the bars revealed low values of energy, moisture or carbohydrates, which is positive because nowadays foods with low caloric density and little sugar are valued. Moreover the values of fibre and minerals were high, thus bringing added nutritional advantages. Through sensory evaluation it was possible to understand that the simple kiwi bar was that preferred by the panellists. Colour evaluation showed that the simple kiwi bar had more intense yellow and green colourations as compared to the other bar. Also textural results showed that the simple kiwi bar was softer inside but with a hard surface.
- The Sensory Features of Packaging and Its Effects on Product Perception: An AbstractPublication . Ferreira, BrunoThe present study shows the influence of tactile contacts with packaging on product taste. A within-subject experiment 1 (product: grenadine syrup) × 3 (packaging’s material: plastic, aluminium, glass) was conducted. Moreover, we examine the role of the Need for Touch (NFT) as a moderator. We confirmed that the same product tasted three times by each participant is judged differently depending on the packaging. Furthermore, participants with a high NFT seem to be more influenced by sensory features of packaging than those with a low NFT. These results support previous researches about tactile effects on taste.
