- Augmented reality in Portugal: its use, its development, and contextsPublication . Rito, P. N.The Portuguese Open Access Scientific Repositories of Portugal (RCAPP) platform allows searching and accessing various documents available in various institutional repositories and scientific journals. This set of repositories includes several Portuguese Higher Education institutions that, through these platforms, make available what has been produced by their researchers in different areas. From this portal and with reference to the last five calendar years, the year 2017 (inclusive) and until the year 2021 (inclusive), we sought to obtain information about what has been built or explored with augmented reality, trying to obtain information from these sources on what is being done with this technology in Portugal. From the results obtained, research sources (resources) related to references to non-Portuguese institutions were removed. Thus, on May 31, 2022, an advanced search was carried out on RCAPP using the reference time period from 2017 to 2021, and two sets of words were used to carry out the search and collection. The first used the expression “realidade aumentada” and the second with “augmented reality.” The justification for using the two expressions was related to the fact that Portuguese researchers were encouraged to write their research works in English to allow others to read their work, and this option was adopted to obtain more resources for further analysis. With these searches in Portuguese and in English, a very similar number was obtained in terms of quantity, with one hundred and seven references being collected in Portuguese and one hundred and fourteen references in English. Subsequently, all documents were collected, which resulted in obtaining one hundred and eighty-nine files. In a first review, it was possible to identify several scenarios where augmented reality is used in educational contexts, both from a recreational and educational perspective. This document thus comes to show in an organized way the collection of information related to the contexts where augmented reality is used, obtaining information: that allows identifying the use of this technology, the developments she has had, and catalog this information in a summarized and organized way.
- A Simulation of Data Censored Rigth Type I with Weibull DistributionPublication . Gaspar, Daniel; Andrande Ferreira, LuisIn the maintenance and reliability field, there are frequent analyses with data being censored. In reliability research, many articles do simulation, but few explain how they do it. the loss of information resulting from the unavailable exact failure times will impact negatively the efficiency of reliability analysis. This paper presents four different algorithms to generate random data with a different number of censored values. The four algorithms are compared, and tree parameters are used to select the best one. The Weibull distribution is used to generate the random numbers because it is one of the most used in reliability studies. The results of the algorithm chosen are very relevant; with a sample of n = 50 and a number of cycles of simulations m = 1000, the standard deviation is higher when the shape factor of Weibull distribution is beta = 0.5 and slowly decreases until the shape factor equals 5. The percentage error (PE), one of the indicators selected, is much higher when the percentage of censored data is c = 5%, then goes down when the shape factor increases. There is a different behaviour when censored data is C = 20% and the percentage error (PE) is higher when shape factor is beta = 1.5. This article presents an algorithm that it considers the best for simulating right-censored type-I data. The algorithm has excellent accuracy, random data i.i.d and excellent computational performance.
- Digital realities in education: projects implemented using augmented reality in PortugalPublication . Rito, P. N.The use of mobile devices by students and teachers in the classroom has been widely discussed in the literature. In addition to the traditional access to specific web pages, there are reports about the use of applications that allow access to complex information like animations, videos, and three-dimensional objects. That, in some cases, can be previously planned by the educator, or the educator uses specific applications that already exist on the market. To help educators in this process, they have tools at their disposal to use augmented reality in classroom contexts. The use of this technology has another advantage that has already been identified in the literature: it is an appealing way to focus the attention and interest of its users. An open repository in Portugal (RCAAP) allows access to a wide range of publications (articles, theses, and other scientific documents) that were written or that had the collaboration of professors or researchers from higher education institutions or belonging to an investigation. Despite the limitations of this repository, it is possible to access a set of documents that reveal the state of the art of what has been produced at the scientific level in Portugal. In the research that we carried out through the RCAAP on May 31, it was possible to verify that there are cases of educators who make use of applications that exist in the market to implement the use of digital realities in the classroom context and in these cases, there is no need to program applications. It was also possible to verify the possibility of adapting existing applications to different educational contexts and levels of education. These and other information are important and help to reflect on the topic of digital realities. This investigation uses a systematic review work that aims to understand: the contexts in which applications have been used, answer the question about which applications have been used, what are their characteristics, and then obtain a data reference that will serve as a basis for the design, development, and implementation of an application based on the use of augmented reality.
- Consumer perception and acceptance towards edible insects in GreecePublication . Skendi, A.; Fotopoulou, R.; Guiné, Raquel P. F.Entomophagy has recently gained popularity since insects have been recognized as a more sustainable alternative to other more conventional sources of animal protein. The present study is based on a questionnaire developed in the context of the EISuFood project, aiming at studying the eating habits and knowledge of consumers about edible insects. A questionnaire survey of self-response was carried out in January – February 2022 on a sample of 660 participants via the Google forms platform. The purpose of the present work was to study the perception and acceptance of Greek consumers towards edible insects or products derived from them through the collection of data. To analyze the data, basic descriptive statistical tools were used, combined with crosstabs and chi-square tests. Most participants (87.6%) answered that they have not eaten insects as culinary preparations, snacks or other derived products. Only 7.9% of the respondents answered that have eaten insects and the rest 4.5% reported that do not know or remember eating insects as culinary preparations, snacks or other derived products. Of those that have consumed insects, 78.3% reported consuming them rarely (once per year). About 53.2% of the respondents reported that do notwant to consume edible insects, while 30.6% will consider eating themin the future. Those who answered that will not consume insects and their derived foods were mostly women, and those without a university degree. On the other hand, it seems that the income level, as well as the living place, was not significantly affecting the preference of respondents to consume insects. These results revealed that factors such as sex and education level influence the Greek consumer attitudes and perceptions about edible insects suggesting the need for appropriate training and information of the consumers in the future.
- The Challenges of Disinformation: Perceptions of Social Communication graduates in the face of the threat of fake newsPublication . Martins, Joana; Morais, Nídia Salomé; Midões, MiguelThe challenges of misinformation remain at the top of current concerns, both in terms of the need to understand the phenomenon and in terms of the challenges that fake news represents for the generations more connected to digital media. As part of the project "Media Literacy in Higher Education: an exploratory study with Social Communication students", this article seeks to understand how senior students of a Media Studies course position themselves in the face of the disinformation scenario. The results of the focus group show that these young people have a clear capacity to understand the phenomenon of disinformation, know how to identify its origins, and even how to fight it. Still, the fact that we are talking about a generation whose digital presence is both a characteristic and a representation of changes in their information consumption habits has implications for the reading of the fake news phenomenon. The students' distancing from the media and the polysemy of the term fake news seems to be indicators of some difficulties in the clear distinction between the intentional creation and sharing of false information on social networks and the unintentional diffusion of error by the media outlets. Thus, the polysemy of the term fake news is, from the outset, one of the challenges that urgently needs to be included in media literacy programs, along with strengthening the role, function, and social space that the media occupy in the information sector.
- Digital Communication Strategy and Tourism: Examining Spanish Media Coverage About Portugal as a Tourist DestinationPublication . Veríssimo, Medéia; Lobo, Juliana; Martínez Hernández, Ángela; João Vidal Carvalho; António Abreu; Pedro Liberato; Alejandro PeñaOnline media can influence tourists’ decisions and help build the image of destinations, so monitoring media coverage is a crucial aspect of tracking a destination’s reputation and evaluating the effectiveness of a digital communication strategy. Considering the relationship with international media is part of the Portuguese communication strategy to project its destination image and increase awareness in priority markets, this paper examines Spanish media coverage about Portugal as a tourist destination. For this purpose, the present study scanned Spanish online news over one year, identifying 81 mentions. Different types of online sources (e.g., news portals, online magazines, blogs, and Websites) were analyzed and then described based on several indicators, such as geographic reach, media names, type of coverage, and key messages. Results point to the fact that, although Portugal has been making online media efforts to reinforce its image as a diversified destination in terms of products and places, Spanish media coverage still associates Portugal with sun and sea tourism, mainly referring to destinations such as the Algarve. Therefore, this study aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice by discussing the relevance of digital media to tourism and describing the case of a destination communication strategy.
- Portuguese Born-on-the-Net Brand's Strategy on InstagramPublication . Rodrigues, Ana; Silva, PauloThe internet has become a primary communication and advertising platform, leading to the rise of born-on-the-net brands. These brands are born and widespread on the internet, and their communication strategy is based on this platform. This strategy combines digital marketing and social media like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, which allows brands to establish a close relationship with their customers. This study’s main goal was to understand the communication strategies adopted by the born-on-the-net brands on Instagram and to identify their preferences regarding a publication on this social network. It was also intended to understand the brand’s motivations for choosing the online medium instead of the physical one and to realise how important social networks are for them and which are the most relevant. The research was conducted through a mixed methodology that met qualitative and quantitative methods and included an interview with six born-on-the-net fashion brand managers and a social media specialist, followed by the content analysis of 293 Instagram publications of those same brands. Thus, this investigation intended to contribute to a better knowledge of the born-on-the-net brands and their ways of communication through social media and reflect on the growing domination and importance of the online medium and its platforms.
