- Aging in Online Communities: A Systematic Literature Review of Design RecommendationsPublication . Veloso, Ana; Ferreira, Sónia; Costa, Liliana; Mealha, Óscar; Carlos, SantosThe increase of computer-mediated communication use and the aging population has led to a renewed interest in online communities and social networks for active aging and social support in daily living. However, a systematic understanding of the design recommendations in Senior Online Communities is still lacking in scientific documentation. The aim of this paper is to identify the design recommendations used in online communities that support active aging. In addition, this paper highlights some of the benefits of using online communities by older adults. Twenty-three papers published between January 2015 and May 2020 in English-language, peer-reviewed publications, met inclusion criteria. The review presents a set of recommendations for designing online communities to enhance older adults’ social interactions. A process that aims for “engagement” is suggested to strategically guide the design of Senior Online Communities: Interacting – Sense of Belonging (Role-playing, Storytelling, and Legacy) – Engaging.
- Analysis of the factors that influence the success of relationship marketing in academic libraries.Publication . Figueiredo, Elisabeth; Pereira, Paulo; Ribeiro, Célia; Passos, Clotilde; Antunes, JoaquimPurpose: This study aims to identify the main dimensions of relationship marketing that have the greatest impact on users’ satisfaction and loyalty in academic libraries. Design/methodology/approach: A quantitative study was conducted. Data were collected through a questionnaire survey, directed to the users of four libraries of Universidade Católica Portuguesa, which resulted a total of 292 valid responses. The necessary sample size for the completion of this study was calculated based on Daniel's calculator Soper. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS 27.0) software and structural equation methods were use to test the proposed model. Originality: This study contributes to the existing literature by examining the specific dimensions of relationship marketing that are most influential in the context of university libraries. While prior research has explored relationship marketing in various contexts, this study focuses on the unique environment of academic libraries, thereby providing novel insights into enhancing user satisfaction and fostering loyalty among library users. Findings: The results show that the relationship marketing dimensions that contribute the most to users’ satisfaction and loyalty are: "relational behaviour", "understanding needs" and "quality of services". Additionally, the study identifies the positive relationship between user satisfaction and loyalty, emphasizing the critical role of relationship marketing in fostering long-term user loyalty in the academic library setting. Theoretical/methodological contributions: Increase of scientific knowledge through the validation of a relationship marketing model, through which its implications for the management of university libraries are evidenced. Practical implications: Understanding the main dimensions of relationship marketing that impact user satisfaction and loyalty allows library managers to adapt their strategies and services to motivate and attract users to their spaces and to better meet their needs.
- Baudrillard on the Symbolic Violence of the ImagePublication . Barroso, PauloIn today’s increasingly visual and digital cultures, images are ubiquitous and excessive. We live globally in a new videosphere, where images provoke a plethora of visual information. Some public images are like ideological weapons with which a symbolic violence is exerted because their excessive use, tautological form, and imposing information. It is the power of images acting on the masses, namely on their thinking and feeling, imposing ways of being in society, social attitudes, behaviors, and actions. Images are seductive, credible, and effective, even if the messages are not true or are out of context, illusions, or simulacra, according to Baudrillard. Images produce ideologies, illusions, desires and needs, and simulacra. Therefore, Baudrillard’s perspective on images of violence and the violence of the images is relevant to understand today’s visual cultures. This article aims to relate images to their effects, namely symbolic violence. Images are signs and languages of symbolic violence, which is conceived, transmitted, and shared in the public videosphere. Following a theoretical and conceptual approach based on Baudrillard’s texts, the objective is to discuss the visual rhetoric of images of violence and the violence of the images.
- Camino de Santiago: the routes in the region of ViseuPublication .
- Co-creation and Pedagogical Innovation in Higher Education: An Account of Two Trainees and Facilitators Participating in the Demola Portugal InitiativePublication . Amante, Susana; Silva, Ana Isabel; Pereira, FilipaBetween 2021 and 2023, the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu (IPV), in Portugal, conducted two interdependent projects aimed at training teachers and fostering collaboration between industry and academia. These projects involved teams of students tackling challenges posed by local companies and non-profit organisations. One such challenge, ‘The Mission of Libraries’, explored the future role of libraries in society, partnering with the António Lobo Antunes library. Another challenge, ‘Born to Save’ collaborated with ARTIDERCA-Agência Criativa to enhance people’s lives, particularly through children and their engagement with first aid practices. This paper presents the methodologies, tools, platforms, and tasks employed in addressing these challenges. Through a case study methodology based on the trainees’ reflections on their facilitation process, the study subscribes to the core values identified by the training entity Demola Global. These values, namely communication, action, curiosity, diversity, imperfection, and responsibility contribute to co-creation and help build bridges between academia and the labour market. Such dynamics underpin active learning methodologies, impacting students, teachers, and communities. This research highlights the importance of pedagogical innovation training in preparing teachers to integrate challenge-based learning into their teaching practices and align with the expanded mission of Higher Education Institutions. The implications for policymakers lie in the need to support projects like the Demola Portugal Initiative, fostering collaboration between academia, industry and society to address innovative, real-world challenges.
- Community Radios in Portugal: Mapping an Overlooked Alternative MediaPublication . Midões, MiguelIn Portugal, community projects that involve broadcasting already appeared in the 21st century. These were linked to the development of the Internet, their primary place of existence, because there were no transmissions for the radio waves in FM. The Law of Radio in Portugal does not include a third broadcasting sector, which means these community radios were not, officially speaking, community projects. In this regard, how should one look at this? How many radios are there? If they are community projects, what kind of characteristics do they present? These are some of the questions that guide our research and inquiry. Furthermore, it is not easy to move forward with a community definition of radio, as we will see according to some authors. These community radios represent a change, a new time in which the shared production and the civic participation assume an added importance. Thus, this work’s focus is to create a paradigm of criteria that will allow us to analyze and classify the Portuguese community radios, based on an extensive bibliographical research.
