Abstract(s)
Abstract Background: The new pandemic of coronavirus disease presents an unprecedented challenge to healthcare systems around the world. With the pandemic, nurses faced a multitude of conditions that threaten their health, well-being and ability to carry out their work. Scientific literature documents extreme exhaustion, physical discomfort from long hours of work with face masks and other PPE, fear of contagion and anguish in health professionals. Specifically, urgency/emergency nurses in the context of COVID-19 are likely to have high levels of stress. Objective To diagnose the level of stress among nurses. Plan an intervention program that promotes nurses' emotional management. Methods: The project work methodology was applied with a view to diagnosing the level of stress and planning a specific intervention program to promote the emotional management of emergency/emergency nurses in a COVID-19 context. In conjunction with the scientific literature and in the search for current evidence, a quantitative, non-experimental, cross- sectional research project was designed, with a focus on a non-probabilistic convenience sample of urgency/emergency nurses working in Portugal. Data collection will be supported by a sociodemographic and socio-professional characterization questionnaire and by the Perception of Stress Scale (EPS), adapted for the Portuguese population by Pais Ribeiro & Marques (2009). Results: The most recent evidence documents the existence of a problem that needs to be evaluated in order to manage it better. For this purpose, an Intervention Project and a Research Project were structured, opting for multidisciplinary intervention strategies with a view to empowering/training nurses in the development of coping strategies that facilitate positive mental health. In the execution phase, it is also intended to involve employers and participants in the execution of actions that impact on the minimization of determinants and the implications of stress. Conclusion: It is planned to develop educational and training interventions to protect against possible psychosocial risk factors resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, such as: management of work and rest schedules, management of PPE equipment, stress management and promotion of mental health. Keywords: stress; nurses; urgency/emergency. pandemic; COVID-19.
