Abstract(s)
The project "Memories and Mines of Urgeiriça" focuses on the contributions of art as vector for environmental awareness, understood as a priveliged means to promote more sustainable environmental behaviours and attitudes and civic responsability, calling for change or for the strengthening of good environmental practices. The project was implemented in the municipality of Nelas, Viseu district, based on the socioenvironmental history of Mines of Urgeiriça, located in the Canas de Senhorim village. This research encompassed a set of educational and artistic activities, which are interconnected consistently, starting with the seminar "Urgeiriça: Before, Now and Then", followed by the performance "Darkness" complemented by the singing of hymns of the former workers of Mines of Urgeiriça, culminating with the visit to the art installation "excavations". The results are anchored on two fundamental premises: first, the actual testimony of the miners former workers expressed the influence of human activities on nature inordinate and irresponsibly, which continues to result in harmful consequences for humans, and another showed interventions that the site is subjected (unbridled exploitation of resources to progressive rehabilitation). To this end, we managed to revitalize and strengthen the memory space (physical and mental) and materialize them through art as a way to sensitize the local community about the actions resulting from the interaction of man versus environment, which seen as a privileged means of community development, generator of skills and changes.
