ABSTRACT Introduction: This report presents the training pathway undertaken as part of the Master’s Degree in Medical-Surgical Nursing, highlighting the learning acquired during internships in the emergency department and intensive care units, as well as the research component. These contexts were crucial for the development of personal, communication, and technical-scientific skills, essential for evidence-based nursing practice. Early identification of clinical deterioration, through the National Early Warning Score 2 (NEWS2), is relevant for admission to intensive care units. Objective: To critically reflect on the internships completed, highlighting the development of competencies, and to analyzing the scientific evidence regarding the application of NEWS2 in the emergency department as a predictor of admission to intensive care units, through the development of a scoping review to map existing knowledge and identify gaps in the literature. Methodology: The report is structured in two parts. Part I consists of a reflective analysis of the activities carried out during the internships, based on the competencies of the specialist nurse in Medical-Surgical Nursing. Part II describes the research component, focused on the development of a scoping review, following the recommendations of the Joanna Briggs Institute. Results: The internships provided opportunities to consolidate technical, clinical, and communication skills. The research component enhanced capacities for critical analysis and scientific research. Conclusion: The internship experience was essential for improving clinical practice, enabling care tailored to patients’ needs. The scoping review contributes to evidence-based practice by systematizing knowledge about NEWS2 and supporting informed decisions regarding admission to intensive care units.
