Abstract(s)
Abstract Maternal and obstetric health is an area of nursing specialization. To develop the skills of a specialist nurse, the course provides a theoretical and practical part, with European requirements in assistance during labor and delivery. But this specialty is much more than childbirth, it covers the entire fertile age of the woman and couple. The internships took place in the Greater Lisbon area, in different settings, from primary care to hospital care, in gynaecology, maternal-fetal health, delivery room, puerperium, and neonatology. The report presents the objectives outlined and the critical reflection of the skills developed. In the research component, based on the student's professional experience as an instructor of a modern method of natural family planning, it was decided to conduct a scoping review on the knowledge, attitudes and practices of nurses and physicians in the area of natural family planning. Despite the low use of these methods by women in Portugal, there has been growing interest in methods without side effects and that increase self-knowledge. The scoping review identified gaps in the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of health professionals toward modern methods of natural family planning. It is not possible to conclude whether the attitude of the professionals influences the low utilization by the users or whether the low demand does not motivate the professionals to deepen and update their knowledge in this area. There is, however, a desire by professionals to receive training on this topic. Keywords: women's health; menstrual cycle; health promotion; natural family planning; nursing; midwifery.
