Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: The Center is a region with enormous tourism potential, becoming increasingly associated with sustainable development projects in Rural Tourism (Gomes, 2015). Rural Tourism (TER) has received more attention from researchers, politicians and managers, associated with the recognition of the "rural crisis" and the desire to solve it (Kastenholz, 2013) being an important development strategy for some rural areas. The TER can be seen not only as a tourist alternative, but also as an important factor for the economic development of rural areas. It will also allow tourists to develop their personal culture and can acquire new experiences and knowledge. The studies conducted to date have focused essentially on the motivations of TER unit users without analyzing the reasons for non-users. The aim of this paper is to understand which are the main demotivations / constraints that lead the tourist not to look for the TER product in the Central Portugal Region. To achieve this objective, methodologically, a literature review of the concepts associated with TER was used, such as the historical background, concept and the main objectives of the modality, the profile of the TER tourist, as well as their motivations and constraints for the practice of the TER and a statistical analysis at national level and an analysis of the Centro Region. Subsequently, interviews were conducted with owners of accommodation of the TER modality and 507 surveys were applied by questionnaire., in which 150 were surveyed in person and the rest through an online survey, trying to cover the Central Region, to collect information and data, applied between the months of July and October 2019. The results allow us to conclude that the most significant constraints for the practice of TER, focused on the preference for another type of tourism, lack of taste for the countryside and nature, TER accommodation units located in territories that are depopulated and with great aging populations, and, scarce of complementary activities (sports equipment, animation, among others). On the other hand, regarding the main motivations, it was observed that TER tourists value, mainly, the escape from city life, contact with nature, the refuge of everyday life, physical and mental relaxation and good hospitality and reception in establishments.
