Enquadramento: O enfermeiro Especialista em Enfermagem de Saúde Materna e Obstétrica
é desafiado a entender as perspetivas, as tradições, os valores, as práticas e os sistemas
familiares de todas as populações, culturalmente diversas com as quais se cruza e às quais
presta cuidados, bem como a conhecer as variáveis complexas que as pessoas atribuem ao
seu sentido de saúde e de bem-estar.
Objetivos: Compreender o significado de competência cultural na perspetiva do Enfermeiro
Especialista em Enfermagem de Saúde Materna e Obstétrica; compreender a contribuição
dos mediadores interculturais nos cuidados prestados pelo Enfermeiro Especialista em
Enfermagem de Saúde Materna e Obstétrica às mulheres imigrantes.
Metodologia: Estudo qualitativo, com recurso ao método fenomenológico-hermenêutico,
tendo como instrumento de recolha de dados a entrevista semiestruturada. Quanto aos
participantes no estudo foram selecionados 10 enfermeiros a exercerem funções no bloco de
partos de um hospital da Grande Lisboa. Recorreu-se à análise qualitativa de dados, a qual
foi apoiada pelo Nvivo12. Este estudo insere-se no estudo sobre os Mediadores Interculturais
nas Unidades de Saúde – MEIOS – Mediação Intercultural e Outcomes em Saúde,
desenvolvido pela Rede de Ensino Superior em Mediação Intercultural, promovido pelo Alto
Comissariado para as Migrações, estudo que foi autorizado pela CNPD e obtido
consentimento por parte da Comissão de Ética da Instituição onde foi realizado o estudo.
Resultados: Da análise do verbatim das entrevistas emergiram sete categorias de significado
cultural: constrangimentos dos enfermeiros na interação com a mulher imigrante; estratégias
utilizadas pelo EESMO na interação com a mulher imigrante; estratégias utilizadas pelo
EESMO para se tornar mediador intercultural; funções do mediador intercultural
percecionadas pelo EESMO; significado de cuidado culturalmente competente; recursos
escassos nos serviços para cuidar de imigrantes e dificuldades reconhecidas pelo EESMO
para se tornar mediador intercultural.
Conclusão: O enfermeiro depara-se com vários constrangimentos no cuidar mulheres
imigrantes desenvolvendo estratégias pontuais para conseguir estabelecer uma comunicação
efetiva. As evidências apontam para a necessidade de se dotarem as instituições de saúde
de recursos humanos e materiais que ajudem o enfermeiro a promover cuidados
culturalmente congruentes, o que se poderá vir a traduzir numa melhor qualidade de cuidados,
saúde e bem-estar.

Abstract Background: The nursing specialist in Maternal and Obstetrical Nursing is challenged to understand the perspectives, traditions, values, practices and family systems of all populations, including the culturally diverse, with whom they intersect and provide care to, as well as to learn the complex variables that affect their sense of health and well-being. Goals: To understand the meaning of cultural competence in perspective of the Nursing Specialist in Maternal and Obstetrical Nursing; to understand the contribution of intercultural mediators on the care provided by the Nursing Specialist in Maternal and Obstetrical Nursing to immigrant women. Methodology: Qualitative study, using the phenomenological-hermeneutic method, having as a data collection instrument the semi-structured interview. As for the participants in the study, 10 nurses were selected to perform functions in the delivery room of a hospital in Greater Lisbon. Qualitative data analysis was used, which was supported by the Nvivo12. This study is part of the study on Intercultural Mediators in Health Units - MEIOS - Intercultural Mediation and Outcomes in Health, developed by the Network of Higher Education in Intercultural Mediation, promoted by the High Commissariat for Migrations, a study that was authorized by the CNPD and obtained consent by the Ethics Committee of the Institution where the study was carried out. Results: From the verbatim analysis of the interviews emerged seven categories of cultural significance: constraints of the nurses in the interaction with the immigrant woman, strategies utilized by the EESMO in the interaction with the immigrant woman, strategies by the EESMO to become an intercultural mediator; functions by the intercultural mediator perceived by the EESMO, meaning of culturally competent care, resources lacking in services to care for immigrants and difficulties recognized by the EESMO to become an intercultural mediator. Conclusion: The nurse faces various constraints in caring for immigrant women, developing punctual strategies to establish effective communication. The evidences point to the need to equip health institutions with human and material resources that help the nurse promoting culturally congruent care, which can translate into a higher quality of care, health and wellbeing.
