Abstract Background: The master’s degree in Paediatric and Child Health Nursing enabled the development of knowledge and competencies essential to specialized nursing practice. The clinical training period and the development of a research study contributed to the consolidation of professional practice. Objectives: To describe, analyze, and reflect on the development of competencies throughout the clinical training period; to assess whether there is an association between parental lifestyle and the nutritional status of children aged 6 to 18 years. Methods: A quantitative, descriptive-correlational, and cross-sectional study was conducted. A non-probabilistic convenience sample of 71 parents and caregivers of children and adolescents aged 6 to 18 years participated in the study. Data were collected through an online questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS, applying descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests. Results: A high prevalence of overweight was observed among children, and parents presented a mean BMI indicative of overweight. A statistically significant association was found between parental BMI and children’s BMI. Conclusion: The clinical training period and the research study contributed to the acquisition of essential competencies for specialized practice. The findings highlight the importance of training and raising awareness among nurses to promote healthy lifestyles, emphasizing the role of the family environment in children’s nutritional status.
