| dc.description.abstract | Social support formal and informal is fundamental to the well-being of families and to the functioning of children and young people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Structured support networks facilitate adaptation to the challenges of the condition, promoting greater autonomy and inclusion. In this context, it is important to analyze how families perceive these supports and how they influence their children’s functioning over the course of development. Thus, the present study aimed to understand families’ perspectives on the available social support and its relationship with the functioning of individuals with ASD. It sought to analyze how, according to family perspectives, formal and informal support networks influence the development, autonomy, and functioning of children with this diagnosis. The specific objectives included: understanding the process of ASD diagnosis; identifying and analyzing families’ social support networks, graphically representing, through the Ecomap, the most relevant sources of support; and understanding family perceptions regarding support and the functioning of young people with ASD. This is a descriptive, qualitative study conducted with eight participants, all mothers, divided into two groups: four mothers of preschool-aged children and four mothers of young adults (18–24 years) diagnosed with ASD. Semi-structured interviews were used, transcribed in full, and analyzed using Content Analysis techniques. The study showed that, according to the participants, families experience the diagnosis of ASD with uncertainty and a lack of information, often resorting to independently seeking support. Support networks proved to be essential but uneven, with gaps in the continuity of services, especially after the age of 18. According to the mothers, significant progress in development and autonomy is observed when there is consistent specialized intervention, although difficulties persist in certain areas. Overall, from the interviewees’ perspective, the functioning of children and young people with ASD appears to depend strongly on the quality and continuity of the available supports. | eng |
