Abstract(s)

ABSTRAT This study proposes to examine "The Influence of nutritional status on depression in patients in Palliative Care." The philosophy of Palliative Care is to provide global support, aimed at controlling symptoms and improving quality of life of patients and their families. In this regard the assessment made in the nutritional screening identifies the risk of the patient; when known, the results of the assessment make it possible to fit it into a nutritional plan, thus contributing to their well-being on physical, mental and social levels. As depression diagnosis becomes more frequent in our society and as these patients are being more vulnerable, early detection, treatment and monitoring are imperative, in order not to in order not to incorrectly diagnose We chose a quantitative, cross-sectional, descriptive and correlational study using a data collection instrument, and a non-probabilistic sample, comprising 50 patients, of whom 52% were female and 48% male, with ages between 41 and 95 years, 84% had been hospitalized in a PCU, 62% of patients are treated with antidepressants. The most frequent diagnosis is neoplasm with 86%, in the last month 62% had loss of appetite and 40% had vomiting. Across the MUST range we verified that the sample had a BMI of 22.61, with an average weight of 69.80 kg and an average weight loss of 13.83%, characterizing a high risk of malnutrition (70%). Through the Beck Depression Inventory we’ve found that in the sample, 92% "exhibit depression" and that depressive symptoms are more severe in females than in males ( x =27.23 Vs x =24.63), although it is not statistically significant, we also identified that 60% had serious depression. It was further observed that from all the socio-demographic variables, age presents a a low and positive association(r=0.260; p=0.048) although it is not statistically significant. It appears that the risk of nutritional status does not influence in depression, noting a very low positive association (r=0.035; p=0.817). Given the nutritional status variable, no statistically significant differences exist, hence not having verified the influence of nutritional status in depression.
