Abstract(s)
A ação do enfermeiro especialista ESIP deve dar resposta

Abstract Background: The increasing scientific and technical demands of nursing care requires differentiation and specialisation of the nursing staff. The action of the paediatric clinical nurse specialist should be taken to meet the needs of the child and their family, through provision of high quality and satisfactory care. Providing such level of care requires from the specialist nurse different skills to those of a staff nurse. Aims and objectives: To outline and contemplate the activities that led to the acquisition and/or development of specialised paediatric skills. To understand, from the nurses' point of view, which skills and competencies distinguish them as specialists in their clinical practice: i) describe the specific competencies and skills which differentiate the specialist nurses; ii) understand how these specialized competencies and skills are acquired and applied for a distinct clinical practice; iii) reflect on the feelings of professional recognition which result from a specialised clinical practice. Methods: Descriptive and reflective essay of the learning gained from practical experience during clinical internship. A qualitative exploratory research was further conducted for data collection, resorting to focus group interview using a non-probabilistic sample of two groups of 5 to 7 paediatric specialist nurses with different years of experience, moderated by planned discussion questions and prompts. Bardin (2001) technique was used for content analysis. Results: Three distinctive categories were outlined following data analysis from the group discussions: first category relates to the differential features of the specialised practice, namely within the cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains; second category relates to the development of specific skills, from which subcategories related to professional experience, training and personal characteristics stood out; and the third category relates to professional recognition of the specialised practice, highlighting feelings of professional appreciation, mainly at a personal, familiar and teamwork level, but also feelings of devaluation associated with the apparent lack of knowledge of this professional speciality by parents and children. Conclusion: This study has outlined some specialised nursing competencies and skills acquired mainly through formal training and practical experience, which are considered by the paediatric specialist nurses as differentiators in clinical practice. It has also allowed a deeper understanding of how these competencies and skills are valued by the specialist nurses and the teams they integrate, highlighting however the further need of acknowledgement by parents and children. Keywords: Practice Nurse's Scopes; Professional Competence; Specialist, Pediatric Nursing.
