Abstract(s)
This report presents the results of the final work placement, part of the second year of the Master's programme in Psychosocial Intervention with Children and Young People at Risk. During the internship, I took part in the development and implementation of collaborative activities and supported the CPCJ's regular activities, namely observing and monitoring cases. With the support of members of the Child and Youth Protection Commission, it was possible to identify the main causes and factors that influence school absenteeism, from the perspective of young students from the Cabeceiras de Basto School Group. For this purpose, data was collected from a sample of 56 students belonging to the 7th, 8th and 9th grade classes. The instrument used in this study was a questionnaire survey, and the subsequent data analysis was carried out using IBM SPSS, version 29.0. After analysing the results, it was possible to conclude that school absenteeism is strongly influenced by young people's family context, but also by indicators of the school environment. Among the causes identified, the pressure exerted by parents to achieve good school results stands out, as does the lack of knowledge on the part of families about their children's peer group and the contingencies of missing school. It was possible to understand that there are gender differences when it comes to school absenteeism and that age and year of schooling are factors that contribute to absenteeism. Finally, it was possible to verify that a healthy teacher-student relationship is important for the academic development of Cabeceiras de Basto's students.
