Abstract(s)

Abstract Background - The school context, especially the peer group, the social environment and the school context, where the students are inserted, are considered the greatest and strongest predictors of tobacco consumption, assuming this is an area of intervention of the specialist nurse in community health, which has direct contact with the population and a deeper knowledge of their health problems. Objective - To identify the determinants of the degree of nicotine dependence of vocational students. Material and Method - A quantitative, cross-sectional, descriptive-correlational study with a non-probabilistic sample for the convenience of 101 smoking students, with a mean age of 17.63 ± 1.39 years. The questionnaire was used to characterize socio-demographic, academic, family and lifestyles, to the Decisional Balance Scale - BD (Trigo & Silva, 2003) and to the Nicotine Dependence Degree Evaluation Questionnaire - Modified Fagerstrom Test. Results - Of the total of 281 students from two Professional Schools, 101 are smokers. The educational establishment, the number of siblings, the father's professional situation and the decision-making balance are variables that have statistically interfered in nicotine dependence. Age, sex, decision-making (factors against and pros) and sleep quality explain nicotine dependence. Age and the decision - making balance - factor pros establish an inverse relationship with nicotine dependence, suggesting that younger students with fewer pros in the decision - making balance show a greater dependence on nicotine. Only the decision-making balance - pros factor and sleep quality have proved to be predictors of nicotine addiction among students in vocational education. Conclusion - In view of the results found, the need for greater intervention in the school community arises, defending the value of health and working towards the anticipation of the risks of tobacco consumption, thus building the well-being students, with the participation of the entire educational community. Keywords: Professional education, Students; Nicotine addiction.
