Abstract(s)

ABSTRACT The Functional Dependency of the Post-Stroke Elderly has physical and emotional consequences, compromising their functional capacity, independence and autonomy; it may also have social and economic effects that invade every aspect of their daily life. Thus, this quantitative, cross-sectional, descriptive and correlational study was objectified in order to characterize the elderly after stroke, identify their family functioning; variables related to their health (by clinical variables: number of diseases, presence or absence of risk factors for stroke, completion of rehabilitation program); verify the degree of dependency of the elderly in the development of activities of daily living and analyze the existence of a statistically significant relationship between independent variables and functional dependence after stroke in the elderly. The sampling method followed was not accidental probabilistic by convenience, for a total of 60 institutionalized elderly in nursing homes. We applied a demographic form, the Graffar Scale, the Family Apgar Scale and Dependence Rapid and Global Rating Scale. The results showed that most elderly show moderate dependence, with greater reliance on Body and Locomotor Activities. We verified the existence of a statistically significant relationship between marital status, number of illnesses, presence of risk factors and functional dependence after stroke in the elderly. Due to this, we must assume an active role in promoting healthy lifestyles among the communities, crucial strategy in the prevention of stroke, as well as to promote physical exercise programs in institutions, in order to reduce the decline in motor and cognitive impairment among the elderly. KEYWORDS: Elderly; Post-Stroke; Functional Dependency.
