Abstract Introduction: Throughout the specialization in Child and Pediatric Health Nursing, competencies focused on child- and family-centred care were developed, with emphasis on health promotion, disease prevention, and quality of care. Oral health plays a key role in children's overall well-being and quality of life. Its assessment may be undertaken through parental and caregiver perceptions, with the Parental-Caregiver Perceptions Questionnaire (P-CPQ) being a widely used instrument for this purpose. Objective: To critically reflect on the competencies developed throughout the clinical placement experience and to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the P-CPQ. Methods: A critical-reflective approach was used to analyse the competencies developed in Pediatric Emergency Care, Pediatric Inpatient Care, and Neonatology settings. In parallel, a quantitative, cross-sectional, methodological study was conducted with a non-probabilistic convenience sample of 250 parents/caregivers of children aged between 6 and 14 years. Internal consistency, composite reliability, convergent and discriminant validity, and confirmatory factor analysis were assessed. Results: The Portuguese version of the P-CPQ demonstrated high overall internal consistency (α = 0.909; ω = 0.906), with stronger indicators in the Emotional Well-being and Social Well-being dimensions. Confirmatory factor analysis generally supported the theoretical structure of the instrument, with statistically significant factor loadings for all items. The findings indicated overall adequate psychometric properties, although the clinical dimensions showed less robust convergent and discriminant validity indicators. The clinical placement experience contributed to the development of specialized competencies in child and family assessment, therapeutic communication, pain management, child development promotion, parental empowerment, and family-centred care. Conclusion: The Portuguese version of the P-CPQ demonstrated overall adequate psychometric properties, supporting its use in assessing oral health-related quality of life among Portuguese children. The training pathway contributed to the development of specialized competencies in Child and Pediatric Health Nursing, reinforcing the integration of scientific evidence into clinical practice and the delivery of child- and family-centred care. Keywords: oral health-related quality of life; oral health; child; caregivers; validation studies
