Abstract: Animal welfare has been widely recognized as a fundamental indicator of the quality of housing systems, particularly in shelter contexts where animals are in a vulnerable situation. In order to assess the welfare conditions of dogs housed at Santuário Animal Vida Boa, in Vila Real, the Shelter Quality Protocol was applied, within the framework of the Welfare Quality® principles. This protocol-based assessment focuses on indicators at the shelter, enclosure, and individual levels, with a total of 30 enclosures and 40 dogs evaluated. Additionally, a SWOT analysis was conducted to identify internal and external factors with the potential to influence animal welfare. Overall, the results revealed conditions favorable to animal welfare, including the availability of clean water, bedding or shelter, climatic protection, and a low frequency of clinical signs and repetitive behaviors. Regarding the individual assessment, most dogs showed an adequate body condition, clean coat, absence of skin alterations, and predominantly sociable responses, although some cases of lameness were observed in geriatric dogs. The SWOT analysis supported this generally positive assessment, while also identifying areas for improvement, such as the predominance of individual housing, the potential impact of dirt flooring and seasonal mud accumulation on animal comfort, as well as the need to monitor the effects of constant visual contact between dogs. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the sanctuary provides an overall environment favorable to the welfare of dogs, although there remains room for improvement through practical management measures, environmental enrichment, and infrastructure adjustments.
