ABSTRACT Key words: emotional bonding, father, baby, engagement, pregnancy, childbirth The aim of this study is to understand the implications of the father‟s involvement during pregnancy and childbirth in the emotional bond with the baby. The emotional bond between father and child is key to the transition to parenthood and to the baby‟s development. When the father is strongly bonded with his child, he feels more responsible for his family to provide them with emotional, physical and financial support. Recent literature indicates that age (not too high), a high level of education, planning the pregnancy and waiting for the birth of the first child promotes the father‟s involvement in the pregnancy, which increases prenatal bonding. This is a cross-sectional, quantitative study which is descriptive and analytical in nature. We intend to verify if there is a relationship between socio-demographic variables, involvement in pregnancy or cutting the umbilical cord with the father‟s emotional bond with the baby. The study was conducted by administering a questionnaire at three different times (during labour, on the 1st and on the 3rd days after birth) to 222 fathers at the St. Teotonio Hospital-Viseu EPE between November 2010 and January 2011. The father's emotional bond with the baby was measured using the Bonding scale, validated for the Portuguese population (FIGUEIREDO [et al.] 2005 a). From analysing the data, with a confidence interval of 95%, we found that age (between 25 and 40 years) (p = 0.024), accompanying the mother during her medical appointments (p = 0.011), accompanying the mother in preparation for the birth (p = 0.002), reading information about baby development (p = 0.006), involvement in the pregnancy (p = 0.000) and cutting the umbilical cord (p = 0.001) positively influence the father's emotional bond with the baby. The results indicate an improvement in the emotional bond between father and child if health care providers promote the father‟s involvement throughout the pregnancy, including through accompanying the mother during her medical appointments, in preparation for the baby's birth and reading of information on baby development. The father‟s involvement at birth, being aware of his expectations and providing the opportunity to cut the umbilical cord also seem to have a positive influence on his emotional bond with the baby.
