Abstract(s)
This paper analyses the role of rural entrepreneurship in the development of a peripheral region of Portugal – Montemuro. These people have been stimulated to develop entrepreneurial initiatives in the countryside, taking advantage of local and endogenous environment and resources and traditional knowledge. The creation of several craftsman cooperatives, a “green business” and a theatre company almost 30 years ago in the region, was the result of the effort of the Institute of Cultural Affairs which based on the diagnosis of Castro Daire municipality was able to organise local people to work together. The “fruits” of such initiatives are visible today, being Campo Benfeito and Mezio two of the most dynamics villages of the municipality.
