Nowadays, Social organizations play a central and indispensable role in the well-being of many individuals in society, which makes it essential to study the impact that stress has on the mental health of workers and the methods that organizations can adopt to reduce this factor and thus ensure the best quality of performance for individuals as well as the quality of the services provided by the institution. The aim of this study was therefore to deepen our understanding of the role of Private Social Solidarity Institutions (IPSS) in society, to get to know their field of intervention in mental health and, within this, to study the effects generated by stress in the work teams of one of these institutions. The main objectives that led us to this study were: to analyse the sources and manifestations of work-related stress in the IPSS; to assess the impact of work-related stress on individual and organisational performance in the IPSS; and, finally, to propose strategies for managing and preventing work-related stress in the IPSS. In the theoretical framework, some concepts were covered, namely: the Third Sector and the Social Economy, as well as Social Organisations; the idea of stress and the consequences it has at an individual level as well as at an organisational level and, finally, preventive measures for psychosocial risks. As far as the empirical part of the research is concerned, a quantitative methodology was used with a questionnaire survey addressed to the employees, considered in their different professional categories, of the IPSS ‘Associação Portas P´rà Vida’, located in the municipality of Lamego, in the district of Viseu. After analysing the results obtained, the organisational environment can affect workers' performance, leading to the creation of stress factors that can be pathological, i.e. that can lead to the appearance of chronic depression and anxiety. However, during this study, we looked at some measures that could improve the workers' connection with the organizational environment and their employer, acting as mitigating elements. Keywords: Social Organisations, Private Social Solidarity Institutions, Stress, Work environment, Preventive measures for psychosocial risks.
