This placement report outlines the work carried out as part of the curricular placement undertaken to obtain a Master’s degree in Psychosocial Intervention with Children and Young People at Risk, at the Viseu School of Education. The curricular placement took place at a Commission for the Protection of Children and Young People at Risk in the northern region. The placement was structured around four areas of intervention: the first focused on collaborating in the Commission’s procedural activities, which constituted the main component of the placement. Through an analysis of the caseload, it was possible to identify that the predominant issue in the region was the exposure of children and young people to situations of domestic violence. In this context, 41 consultations, 16 home visits, 18 meetings of the Restricted Committee and 3 meetings of the Extended Committee were carried out, providing an understanding of how the CPCJ operates and the multidisciplinary intervention carried out with children, young people and their families. Areas 2 and 3 focus on collaboration in activities to raise awareness of children’s rights and on collaboration in activities for Child Abuse Prevention Month, reinforcing the importance of promoting children’s rights, as well as raising community awareness of child abuse. The fourth strand involved conducting a case study on a family supported by the CPCJ in a context of domestic violence. To this end, the aim of this research was to understand the functioning and relational dynamics of a family at risk, within a context of domestic violence, taking into account its structure, risk and protective factors, and social support network. The results highlighted weaknesses in the family’s structure and relational dynamics, as well as a support network heavily centred on the extended family and limited community integration. Risk factors were identified in addition to the main issue, namely substance misuse by the parent, domestic violence and instances of neglect. Protective factors were also identified, notably positive and collaborative communication between the agencies involved and the family, as well as the close relationship between the mother and her younger daughters, in contrast to the situation with the eldest son, with whom the relationship was fragile. Based on these results, lines of intervention tailored to the family’s needs were proposed. It is important to raise public awareness of the importance of reporting alleged cases of abuse, as by reporting them to the relevant authorities, people are helping to prevent these situations from escalating into more serious ones.
