Abstract Introduction: Internships are an integral part of postgraduate specialization courses in nursing and master's degrees in nursing. Research is also a fundamental component, both of which contribute to the development of skills inherent to the profession. In this way, we present the training pathway in the Pediatrics, Child and Family Health and Neonatology internships, as well as the entire research process carried out. Objectives: To describe and reflect on the activities carried out during the internships and the acquisition of common and specific skills, based on the defined objectives; to describe and discuss the reasons that lead adolescents with mental disorders to the emergency department and prevalence rates, based on scientific production. Methodology: In the first part of the paper, we critically reflect on the activities carried out during the internships to develop specialized skills, supported by scientific evidence. In the second part, we presented a narrative review whose objective was to verify the reasons that lead adolescents with mental disorders to the emergency department and prevalence rates. Results: The training carried out in primary health care, in the area of child and adolescent health, and in differentiated health care, in the area of pediatrics and neonatology, was fundamental for the acquisition of knowledge, skills and competences of the specialist nurse in child and pediatric health nursing and master. We highlight the improvement of skills to provide excellent care to the newborn/child/young person and family. The results of the narrative review show a clear increase in the use of emergency services by adolescents with mental health problems, namely eating disorders, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety, trauma, high levels of stress and mood disorders. This evidence represents a significant challenge for emergency services which have to respond to the growing demand from this pediatric population, and there is a need for greater coordination between social care, adolescent mental health services and emergency services. Conclusion: It was possible with this work to meet the proposed objectives and successfully develop the expected competencies. This report also reflects the implications of this training course for professional practice. The research has provided knowledge based on evidence, which helps to plan and implement personalized interventions for each adolescent, helping them in a phase of their life that is in it so complexe. Keywords: adolescents ; mental disorders; emergency department ; nursing
