Abstract(s)

ABSTRACT Introduction: Falls are associated with morbidity and mortality in the elderly. The main goal of this systematic review was to identify, describe and analyze the effect of exercise on reducing the risk of falls in the elderly. Methodology: We conducted a careful search in the Medline / Pubmed and B-on data bases, with the following descriptors: "accidental falls", "aged", "exercise". We found 97 articles and after reading the abstracts, and application of inclusion and exclusion criteria, left five articles that took part in the final analysis. All the articles included individuals aged 65 years or more submitted to falls prevention programs, including exercise. Results: The results suggest that exercise is one effective strategy for reducing the risk of falls. Relate to the main components of each program, there was a predominance of muscle strengthening exercises, training for static and dynamic balance and coordination exercises and flexibility. The studies did not present sufficient clarification regarding the frequency, duration and intensity of exercise sessions. Conclusion: Physical exercise can be crucial in the prevention of falls in the elderly in the community, however, more research is needed in the area, and the studies must show more clearly some methodological aspects that allow replication and comparison of their results. Keywords: Falls, Aged, Exercise.
