Enquadramento

Abstract Background The professional internship developed and that gave answer to this report, aims at the development of skills for obtaining the title of specialist and master's degree in maternal, obstetric and gynecological health. In the research component we studied the Kristeller maneuver, a questionable obstetric practice. Objectives This report aimed to demonstrate the acquisition of skills of the specialist nurse in maternal, obstetric, and gynecological health and to identify maternal complications associated with the use of the Kristeller maneuver in the second period of labor. Methodology With regard to Chapter I, a reflective analysis of my practice during clinical teaching was carried out, always based on the latest scientific evidence. In the research axis, a quantitative, relational-analytical, cross-sectional cohort study was carried out in a non-probability convenience sample, according to the snowball method with data collection through an online questionnaire to 275 women who gave birth in Portugal in the last 5 years. Data were obtained on obstetric history, assessment of discomfort related to pelvic floor dysfunctions and their impact, and their relationship with sociodemographic factors of the sample and with data on the last delivery. Conclusion The expected common and specific skills were acquired. The evidence found shows that performing the Kristeller Maneuver is an act of obstetric violence, being characterized as an invasive practice with potentially negative results for the health of the woman and the baby. Given this reality, it is considered essential that the OBGYN Nurse/midwife, through the skills that it possesses and based on its specialized knowledge, raise awareness among health professionals about good obstetric practices.
