Abstract(s)
O desporto paralĂmpico possui realidades bem distintas e no Brasil, o esporte adaptado sĂł despontou
anĂĄlise do paratleta Carlos Alberto Lopes Maciel.
Paralympic sport has very different realities and in Brazil, adapted sport only emerged at a level of excellence, starting from the Athens Paralympics (2004), where through the media, it showed that people with disabilities were able to overcome the barriers of practice sports. The aim of this study was to identify the main factors underlying the excellence of Paralympic swimming, based on the analysis of the parathlete Carlos Alberto Lopes Maciel. This is an ethnographic study (life history) with a qualitative approach to the results, which used interviews and bibliographic research. The results showed that, regarding the contributions to the development of sporting excellence, the intrinsic factors stood out: self-motivation, determination and willpower, while among the extrinsic factors, it was evident: the support of family and teachers / coaches, the specific training, financial support, sponsorships, infrastructure for training, qualified professionals and incentives for parasports. Social prejudice and financial uncertainty were the main barriers and difficulties faced by the athlete. It was concluded that the achievement and permanence in a level of excellence in Paralympic sport depends on the integration of internal and external factors that are part of the personal reality and life history of each athlete.
