Abstract(s)

Abstract Background: The evaluation of the nursing workload in the patients hospitalized in the Intensive Care Units makes an important contribution to the quality of care, optimization of resources and reduction of costs. The Nursing Activities Score is an important management tool in these units, resulting from a review and update of TISS 28, in 2003. In Portugal the TISS 28 continues to be applied as the only validated tool for this purpose, measuring only 43.3% of the workload, while the NAS covers 80.8% of the nurses workload in the ICU. Objective: Translate and cross-cultural the NAS measurement instrument to the Portuguese population, and to test its validity and reliability. For this we characterize the study sample, analyzing the relationship between the results of the NAS measure instrument, with some demographic and clinical variables. Materials and methods: The methodological option relied on a descriptive - correlational study, in an approach of quantitative nature, following a non - probabilistic sampling process, for convenience. The data collection instrument was applied during four months to 240 adult patients hospitalized in four ICU`s. Results: From the translation and cultural adaptation of the NAS measurement instrument, when comparing the original scale with the retroverted scale, no differences were identified, and was accepted by the authors. From the analysis of its psychometric properties, the analysis of internal consistency by Cronbach's alpha revealed unsatisfactory indices (,334), since the NAS has 23 independent, heterogeneous, dichotomous items with inter-item variance (Marôco & Garcia-Marques, 2006). The concurrent validity was demonstrated by the statistically significant correlation between NAS and TISS 28 (r= ,678; p= ,000), as well as the result of multiple linear regression (r2= ,303, p= ,000). Convergent validity was demonstrated by the statistically significant correlation between NAS and SAPS II (r= ,542, p= ,000), as well as the result of multiple linear regression (r2= ,079, p= ,000). Conclusions: According to the results obtained, the NAS proved to be a reliable and valid instrument to measure the nurses workload in portuguese ICU`s.
