Abstract Introduction: This report integrates the theoretical and practical experience acquired throughout the Master's Degree in Child and Paediatric Health Nursing, encompassing three clinical contexts: Paediatric Emergency, Paediatric Intensive Care and Neonatology in Local Health Unit. It also includes a research component addressing caregivers’ perception of sleep hygiene in preschool-aged children (three to five years old). Objectives: Describe the clinical practice settings and the activities developed during clinical placements, critically reflecting on their contribution to the development of common and specific competencies of the nurse specialist in Child Health and Paediatric Nursing. Characterise sleep habits and sleep hygiene in preschool-aged children, as well as the perceptions of parents/caregivers regarding the quality of children's sleep. Methodology: Firstly, a critical reflexion on the three clinical contexts was carried out. Then, a quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with the aim of characterizing parents’/caregivers’ habits and perceptions regarding their children’s sleep hygiene. Data were collected using the Children’s Sleep Habits Questionnaire – Portuguese version and the Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire – Revised. Results: Greater regularity in the sleep–wake rhythm was observed between the ages of three and five years, associated with consistent sleep routines. Contrary to scientific consensus, there is no evident perception of a correlation between screen use and difficulties in falling asleep, or in the quality and/or continuity of sleep. Children whose caregivers are familiar with the concept of sleep hygiene exhibit better sleep quality, although more than half of respondents reported that the topic is rarely addressed during child health consultations. Conclusion: Strengthening parental education and awareness regarding the concept of sleep hygiene is essential. These efforts should be particularly targeted at families with lower levels of educational attainment, as they are the least familiar with this concept. Keywords: Sleep Disorders; Sleep Habits; Sleep Hygiene; Preschool; Sleep
