Abstract(s)
Enquadramento: Cuidar de um familiar dependente é uma tarefa difícil, que requer tempo e energia. É assim uma responsabilidade que pode ter um enorme desgaste emocional e físico, especialmente se adicionado à angústia de ver alguém querido a perder as suas capacidades.
Objetivos: É propósito deste estudo analisar se vulnerabilidade ao stress do cuidador é influenciada pelas características do cuidador e/ou da pessoa alvo de cuidados.
Método: Estudo de natureza quantitativa, transversal e descritivo-correlacional realizado numa amostra de 139 cuidadores informais de pessoa com doença crónica incapacitante e dependente; internados nos serviços de medicina Hospital de Vila Franca de Xira. A colheita de dados foi realizada no período de 1 de Julho a 30 de Novembro de 2011. O protocolo de avaliação inclui o Questionário Socio-Demográfico ao cuidador e ao utente alvo de cuidados, o Índice de Katz e a Escala de vulnerabilidade ao stress (Vaz Serra, 2000).
Resultados: Dos participantes 25,2% são do sexo masculino e 74,8% do sexo feminino com idades compreendidas entre 32 e os 90 anos de idades. Dos cuidadores 81,3% são casados, apresentam baixa literacia (74,1%) e encontram-se inativos (69,8%). São essencialmente cônjuges/ companheiros da pessoa dependente (48,9%) ou filhos (as) (33,8%), 30,9% não tem qualquer tipo de apoio no cuidar, dispensam em média 19,14 horas por dia a cuidar, sendo o seu agregado familiar constituído por apenas um elemento (66,4%) e a maioria (87,1%) coabita com a pessoa dependente. A amostra de pessoas dependentes é constituída por 55,4% de indivíduos do sexo masculino e 44,6% do sexo feminino, com uma média de idades de 74,21 anos. O tempo médio de dependência é de 2,77 anos e apresentam elevado grau de dependência. 46,8% da amostra encontra-se vulnerável ao stress.
Existe influência das habilitações literárias, da situação profissional, do número de elementos do agregado familiar, o grau de dependência da pessoa alvo de cuidados; o número de horas despendidas no cuidar e da coabitação sobre a vulnerabilidade ao stress do cuidador informal.
Conclusão: Cuidar de um familiar dependente não pode ser encarado como um problema individual mas sim de toda a sociedade em geral. Urge intervir de forma antecipada e eficaz no sentido de assegurar o bem-estar do cuidador e dos doentes que dele dependem.

Conclusion: Caring for a dependent can not be seen as an individual problem but the whole society.
